An ORG-MARG Nepal study conducted for Nepal Tourism Board in April, 2000 by interviewing departing tourists gives some new insights about the clients of Nepal’s tourism industry. Gleanings from the report:

Duration of stay

While the average duration of stay has increased now to 16 days ...

Average duration of trip

... it is the highest among adventure tourists as in the past.

Interest triggers by segments

Word of mouth is the main driver. Travel agency hardly plays any role in generating interest.

Major actitivies involved

Major activities undertaken by tourists are sight-seeing, shopping and trekking.

Most liked experiences

Experiences most liked by tourists in Nepal: Behavior of people, Trekking.

Comparative Image of Nepal

Nepal is favored over all other selected countries in terms of hospitality, exoticness, adventure, gambling, wildlife and pilgrimage. But overall, it is second to New Zealand. Perhaps, this is because Indians comprised the highest number in the sample, and they may be influenced by the New Zealand locations shown in the blockbuster Hindi movie "Kaho Na Pyar Hai'. Nepal lags behind many other countries in terms of service facilities, shopping as well summer & winter holidays.
