Creating a Network Society 

Computer Association of Nepal
Computer Association of Nepal (CAN) established in December 1992 is an autonomous, non-political, non-partisan, non-profit making and service oriented organization. The association has been formed with the involvement of professionals, specialists, vendors, manufactures and information technology experts within the country.

Objectives

The main objectives of CAN, as mentioned in its constitution, are as follows:

  • To assist in the utilisation, enhancement and promotion of computer science and information technology in the country and to help develop strategies to meet the necessary requirements for the development of literacy and skill regarding computer science.
  • To provide and protect the necessary rights, privileges and benefits to individuals, institutions, companies and organizations affiliated to activities of CAN.

Activities

To fulfill the above objectives, the following activities are envisaged:

  • To assist in the institutional development of computer science.
  • To assist and develop the synchronization and standardization in the field of computer training and education.
  • To organize and conduct seminars, workshops, talk and training programs and to render consultancy and R&D services.
  • To exchange knowledge, skill and technology in the field of computer and information technology with similar types of organizations within and outside the country.
  • To assist in the field of technology transfer, export, import and formulation of national policies.

CAN is the only public forum for IT related issues in Nepal. To create awareness among the masses, it organizes annual Info Tech fair. On the larger prospective, it has been working closely with His Majesty’s Government on national Information Technology (IT) policy formation. CAN has also been promoting the Nepali IT sector in the international arena.

CAN Info-Tech

Introduction:

CAN Info Tech is the only information technology specific yearly exhibition and conference organized in Nepal by CAN since 1995. The event helps promote the Nepali IT industry. The exhibition not only provides channel for marketing computer and information technology products and services, but also increases awareness and computer literacy amongst the people. More than 130 Nepalese and international exhibitors are expected to make CAN Info-Tech 2002 a success. This will attract more than 100,000 visitors in the course of 5 days.

CAN Info-Tech 2002

Introduction:

CAN Info-Tech 2002 will bring together hundreds of experts, professionals, buyers, sellers, manufactures and suppliers to provide a forum for networking and exchange of ideas in the field of information technology. These participants will come together in technical seminars and workshops, to discuss newer and advanced technology and products, organized by leading companies and professional groups.

CAN Info Tech would be a rare display of different technologies under one ceiling. The representation from leading world companies would bring the latest in computer technology for the Nepali audience. The exhibits are expected to include mini computers, high-end workgroup servers, and high-end network PCs from international vendors. Range of laptops and accessories will also be a part of the display. Printers, budget and value PCs, computer and printer accessories and assorted computer hardware would be on prominent display, satisfying the need of average buyer and that of high-end buyer as well.

Computer software, international as well as locally developed, would also be on display. Professional groups are expected to organize technical seminars on different range of software topics, ranging from object oriented programming techniques in Visual Basic to the open source Linux operating system. All flavours of Windows operating system, different flavours of Unix operating system and Novell network servers are also expected to form a part of the show.

Increasingly the next paradigm in computer is said to be the Network, the growth fuelled by the Internet. Leading the way, ISPs would have overwhelming presence. Networking technologies like structured cabling, fibre optics, gigabite ethernet, wireless modems are expected to be attractions for the corporate visitors.

Corporate visitors would find a range of high-end office equipment including network copiers, modular EPABX, paging solutions. World market leaders would be represented. The general visitor would find the home PABX, copier-scanner-fax in one devices, modems more appropriate to their needs.

Computer education would be the attraction for thousands of students longing for quality education at competitive price. Computer training institutes are expected to organize free talk programs and seminars for the visitors.

IT Conference 2002

Introduction:

IT Conference 2002 "IT Revolution: Creating a Network Society in the 21st Century" presents a dynamic, integrated two days of not-to-be-missed Information and Communication Technology (ICT) experiences at the foothills of the Himalayas. This international conference and will take place during CAN Info-Tech 2002. CAN Info Tech "Nepal Information Technology Show and Conference" is Nepal’s largest and only ICT –focused international show and conference.

The conference will present a holistic mix of the big picture, finer details, technical depth, and corporate level perspectives on various facets of ICT. A distinguished panel of keynote speakers will bring a diverse set of insights on different advancements on ICT initiatives around the world.

The two-day conference comprises of intense vertical tracks, in-depth technology, business, management and governance focused sessions related to ICT. This will be an open forum during the quick- hit panels to provide an opportunity for discussion between the speakers and participants. The seven tracks of the conference aims to blend global trends with local market realities and perspectives.

The conference will discuss practical aspect of ICT as well as provide the opportunity to learn from each other’s experience and act as a common platform for sharing success/failure stories related to the use of ICT in strengthening development efforts. For example, it would be very practical and useful for country like Nepal and others to know how ICT can be sued to provide better quality of life. Similarly, how we can improve the quality and/or coverage of education through the use of ICT:CAN is said to see how ICT can be used to educate more poor people, to provide better and affordable public health services in rural areas and increase agricultural yields.

The conference intends to discuss ways to develop ICT as an industry especially in underdeveloped settings and will explore various issues relating to creating and maintaining conducive environment for the development of sustainable ICT initiatives.
