Humankind-Nature-Technology

"Humankind-Nature-Technology: A New World Arising” is the key theme under which the first world Exposition ever held in Germany is inviting visitors to Hanover from June 1 to October 31, 2000. Expo 2000 is a great opportunity for the Federal Republic of Germany to present itself at the beginning of the new century as a cosmopolitan host, a nation of culture, and a modern business location. On the 170-hectare Expo 2000 site, approximately 200 nations and organisations-more than ever before - will be demonstrating how the world can master the challenges of the future.

Expo 2000 is a new kind of world Exposition: it does not merely aim to be a showcase of technological achievement, but to show how humankind can use technology to find a new equilibrium with nature. It has also committed itself to the Agenda 21 principles on sustainable development. Also new is the concept for the Thematic Area: this contribution to the world exposition by the organizers of Expo 2000 aims to bring the key theme of “Humankind-Nature-Technology” to life with the aid of eleven  individual topics in an enormous exhibition covering 100,000 square metres.

For the first time in the 150 year history of world expositions, an Expo is not only taking place in the host country:  but the 770 Projects around the World in all parts of the globe are making Expo 2000 a real “world exposition.” These projects provide local and practical answers to questions that occupy people all over the planet. But there is one thing that can only be had in Hanover: the immediate first-hand experience of a real world exposition with lots of fun, sport and culture. Several thousand events-concerts, plays, performances- await those who come to Hanover. Welcome!

The whole world on 170 hectares-plenty of space for the Thematic Area, the pavilions, Projects around the World, and the extensive culture and events programme. If walking through the Expo world becomes too strenuous, visitors can view the megashow from a height of 40 metres - 87 cars of the Expo Skyliner cableway traverse the grounds. The Expo site is located south of Hanover and uses 100 hectares of existing trade fair grounds; and additional 70 hectares were developed especially for the Expo.

Self-assured, cheerful, attentive-this is how the Expo host nation Germany intends to present itself in its national pavilion. The building, built almost entirely of glass, offers a platform for excitement and diversion under the motto: “Germany-Bridges to the Future.” The theme will be portrayed in three major shows - partly virtual, partly very real: in the novel 720-degree adventure area, in the “German Kaleidoscope” and the “Ideas Workshop.” Furthermore, there will be a wealth of art, music and theatre to enjoy from mornings until late at night. In other words, there will be something happening in the German pavilion throughout the Expo’s opening hours.

An architectural journey around the world on foot: in Hanover 53 nations and organizations are building their pavilions for their Expo contributions. The participants will present their architectural visiting cards in two areas, one to the north-west ad one to the south-east of the 170 hectare site. and in line with the world exhibition’s motto, they all subscribe to the principle of sustainability. The result is new, environmentally friendly architectural ideas with roofs of cardboard or walls of cork and a wealth of suggestions for the use of alternative energy sources. Five spacious parks enclose and connect the futuristic buildings.
