Miss Universe to promote AIDS awareness in Africa
United Nations — The strikingly beautiful and articulate Miss Universe,
Mpule Kwelagobe of Botswana, said February 8 that she will be returning home soon to help
launch an initiative called “The Month of Youth Against AIDS,” to promote the
rights of women and girls to proper health care, and to serve as a goodwill ambassador for
the U.N. Population Fund (UNFPA).
At a press conference at U.N. headquarters, Kwelagobe, accompanied by UNFPA
officials, recalled her past participation in a high school peer education group that
sought to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS prevention and her intention now to use her
celebrity to promote HIV/AIDS awareness nationally and be a role model for young women and
girls in Botswana and elsewhere in Africa.
