Vision For Nepal

Based on proceedings of a seminar, the book compiles a broad policy vision for Nepal

By KESHAB POUDEL

Nepal does not lack intellectuals who sincerely want to do something for the nation but the implementation of their views is always a matter of concern.

Hundreds of books have already been written on issues such as economic liberalization, good governance and other policies but only a few of such recommendations have been put into practice in the past.

The intellectuals began to seriously delve into matters like Nepal's role and status beyond 2000 AD about two years ago. With an initiative from Institute for Integrated Development Studies (IIDS), a national conference was organized recently to discuss the policy matters on various issues. Some of the papers presented at the seminar are highly relevant but nobody seems to have time to put them to good use.

The book consists of discussions and comments by almost all well-known economists, former bureaucrats and intellectuals. From macro to the micro economic policies and financial sector reforms, the book covers all spheres of the national economy.

"Social policies and economic success beyond 2000" discusses the role of non governmental organization in the areas of economic development. The paper on Good Governance in Nepal: Issues and Remedies also highlights the weakness and strength of various aspects of governance.

In the context of globalization, it is impossible for Nepal to develop its infrastructures without entering into the regional market. In the paper, regional cooperation and integration in South Asian countries, among others, discusses various aspects about it.

The papers by Prithvi Raj Ligal, Roop Jyoti, Dr. Shankar Prasad Sharma, Dr. Bal Gopal Baidya, Kul Shekhar Sharma, Professor Shridhar K. Khatri present very interesting read on various issues regarding the economic, social and governance issues.

Comments by Dr. Harka Gurung, Dr. Meena Acharya, Padma Jyoti, Dr. Diwakar Chand, Dr. Yuva Raj Khatiwada and Dr. Pushkar Bajracharya further elaborated the issues.

One of the important part of the book is that it points out the difficulties before Nepal's development planning. At a time when country's major political parties are still in dilemma over the economic reforms, the articles presented in the book could help them find out what is right and what is wrong. "The book will help facilitate to create a basis for the major political parties to give serious thoughts to economic and   social development issues the country is facing today," said Dr. Mohan Man Sainju, Executive Chairman of IIDS.

As Nepal needs to analyze its past experiences to set the tune for future, the proceedings assess all kinds of challenges and constraints of Nepalese economic and social development.

There is a stark need for systematic analysis and examination of problems to formulate economic and social policies for the country.
