EDITOR'S NOTE
The revelation that Parliament is a den of
smugglers by no less a person than the Prime Minister of the country has established
beyond a ray of doubt the misgivings harbored by many a patriotic Nepali for a long time.
That the last general elections was full of fraud, cheatings and abominable activities and
the result too was far from free and fair has also been fully substantiated by the
outburst of the beleaguered head of the majority party government. We, on our part, have
time and again conveyed in no unequivocal terms the concerns the overwhelming majority of
the poor Nepalese people have expressed even about their loyalty to the nation. That the
politicians of all hues who have adorned the floor of the Nepalese parliament except an
insignificant few have exposed their true nature and character in the last ten years. And
this exposure fully justifies the charges labeled against them. Had these politicians any
sense of shame or self respect, most of them would have retired from active politics long
ago. But Nepalese politicians who make to the parliament become hard boiled eggs that do
not break even by a stroke of ten pound hammer. Otherwise, how could they all have behaved
the manner they did recently on the bill to amend the citizenship act. Be that as it may,
many people still would not be prepared to take Prime Minister Koirala at his word. But if
one were to seriously mull over what the Prime Minister has said there is no ground to
doubt his statement. Because the Prime Minister has exposed his own bitter experience.
Nobody other than him would be in a position to know the truth. And he knows all the
parliamentarians in and out. As such, what kind of behaviors are we to expect from our
parliamentarians? No wonder, even after a stable majority, the Nepali Congress government
cannot function effectively. And pray how do you think the Prime Minister should rule the
roost and chasten the recalcitrant MP? In such a vicious situation no one needs be
surprised if frustrated people vent their feelings without least concern to their personal
security. Such threats should not be ignored as harmless. They may not be very dangerous.
But the serious threats are apt to come from the floor of parliament itself. After all
what can one expect from a smuggler? By exposing that there are smugglers amongst MPs, the
Prime Minister might have injudiciously invited danger upon himself. We do trust he will
start taking up ample precautions.
The Army Chief has poked the hornet's nest by
stating that the National Defence Council must be activated. In a situation where the
government has totally failed to generate any faith in its working in the minds of the
people whether it will agree to activate the NDC has become a difficult question to
answer. It is not only the absence of law and order, open corruption and anti-national
behavior of the major political parties that have brought the NDC to the fore. Many unseen
forces also must be working to destabilize the situation. We just cannot ignore the
statement of a highly responsible and nationalist army chief. He must have ample reasons
to come out with such a statement. It must be imperative on the part of the government to
take proper cognizance of the statement and start working on it earnestly.
