Dimensions of Nepali Society and Culture BOOK Nepal : From Anthropologist's Eyes By A CORRESPONDENT As intellectual debate over ethnicity and cultural diversity continues to dominate Nepalese intellectuals, anthropologist and sociologist, Professor Dr. Rishikeshab Raj Regmi has come up with a new book analyzing various cultural and religious importance of Nepal. As a well-known anthropologist Dr. Regmi focuses his study on diverse aspects of Nepalese culture. In his book Dr. Regmi points out many positive dimenisic of Nepalese society like religious and cultural tolerance and ethnic harmony. Dr. Regmi, among others, incorporates various topics such as geography, history, population, religion, festivals, varna and caste system, the status of women and the issues of problems and integration. To elaborate the ethnic points of view, Dr. Regmi talks about ethnic groups from three different regions including terai, hills and mountains. One of the unique features of Nepalese culture is the extrem tolerance among different groups and culture. "Every community respects the culture and relgion of other," said Dr. Rishikeshab Raj Regmi. Nepal's multi-cultural, multi-lingual society has attracted unprecedented attention from scholars and students of anthropology. Even some western scholars have conducted researches on this. At a time when anthropologists from western countries have tried to concentrate on aspects of life such as religion, women, marriage and kinship, Dr. Regmi has adopted a different approach. His new book helps to understand the ethnographic and other anthropological materials about Nepal and have provided impetus to read about our own people and analyze the facts and flaws of previous such researches. In the book, author Regmi talks about Nepal's diverse culture, emphasising on tolerance in the various religions, customs and values that are inherent in Nepalese social structure. Anthropology is still in its infancy in Nepal and it has yet to face many challenges. The first and foremost challenge for anthropology in Nepal is regards the raising of substantive issues. National integration is the paramount goal, and we are going to have to integrate equitably the diverse ethnic groups which have the same kind of aspirations and problems. |
