EDITOR'S NOTE
The
degrading developments in the Nepali Congress politics have not only adversely affected
the administration of the country but severely eroded the credibility of the party itself
and put a big question mark on the moral justification of its right to govern the country
by virtue of being the majority party in the parliament. The people of Nepal and
especially of the capital who had supported the movement for the restoration of democracy
a little more than ten years ago by making supreme sacrifice have been very badly betrayed
by the corrupt and self oriented politicians. The leaders of the Nepali Congress who do
not tire extolling their own virtues are the worst offenders. The second generation
leaders in the Nepali Congress are so spineless that they cannot even think of asserting
themselves. As a matter of fact except that two septuagenarians, there is no leader of the
name who have even an iota of the Charisma to lead. Consequently they think they cannot
survive without the favor and support of one. People did have some expectations from the
incumbent. Prime minister Krishna Prasad Bhattarai. But he totally, failed to raise up to
the occasion. Instead of changing to the power on the wrong advice of his sycophants,
Bhattarai could have salvaged his reputation had he gracefully retired. His life time
ambition achieved, he personally had nothing to lose. And if you are a man of integrity
and love your country you do not hurt the nation to oblige your henchmen. It is, indeed,
very sad Bhattarai missed the bus. The patience of the tolerant poor Nepalese is coming to
end. If they could rise against the Panchayat leaders, they can also rise against the
corrupt democratic leaders. A handful of corrupt leaders cannot be permitted to play with
the destiny of the nation. If the power responsible to protect the people and the country
shies away form the responsibility for long. The consequences could be not only dangerous
but fatal.
The mass murder of the security
forces a few days back must open the eyes of all patriotic people in the country. The
tragedy is not only an exposition of the incompetence of the government. It clearly
demonstrates that the country is heading to serious troubles if patriotic and effective
governance is not initiated. In countries where accountability is a precious virtue
concerned ministers and the security chief would have resigned on the ground of moral
responsibility. But in our dictionary words like morality, integrity and accountability do
not exist. As such, neither the home minister nor the police chief do consider themselves,
accountable and consequently imperative to resign. Even their resignations are not going
to solve the problem. The problem can be solved only through wise realistic and patriotic
policies. We have, time and again, exhorted the government to seek the cooperation of
nationalistic forces. But every time our advice has fallen on deaf ears. What are they
planning ? How are they going to solve the problem? The country wants action and quick
too.
Once again the Nepalese team has
returned from Thimpu empty handed. Once again the Bhutanese have trumped the Nepalese are.
No wonder they have decided to meet again in Kathmandu. Whether much meetings will ever
produce concrete and positive results have become a million dollar question. The Nepalese
side would do well to delve into the real cause of the problem and do some hard home work.
The Bhutanese would be able to solve it ever. The Bhutanese are not only occupying the
driving seat. They are well trained and well guided. The Nepalese lack dynamism
leadership, expert negotiating skill and effective public relations. Nepalese Prime
minister did make a feeble attempt to internationalize the issue. And whether Nepali can
muster enough suport in the international community is also doubtful. The only way this
problem can be tackled success fully is with the active cooperation of India. Nepal must
be able to empress upon her age old friend and neighbor to come her aid, if these vexing
problems is to be solved to her satisfaction.
