BRITAIN-NEPAL TRADE

Venturing New Market

British wool producers offer qualitative wool for Nepalese carpet producers

By A CORESPONDENT

Although it was first gathering of Nepalese and British wool producers, it helped to identify new areas of trade between the two countries.

Organized by the British Embassy and the Nepal Britain Chamber of Commerce and Industry, a half day seminar lured the policy makers, carpet producers and wool importers of Nepal.

At a time when Nepalese carpet industries are searching alternative markets for Nepalese product, the seminar also helped to identify new market.

As Nepal's carpet producers have long been relying on New Zealand and Australia for wool for their products, British wool producers have for the first time shown alternative possibility of supplying more qualitative wool.

Nepal imports more than eighty percent of wool from Australia and New Zealand to manufacture handloom carpet. Nepal exported about Rs 5 billion worth of carpet in 1999.

The British team was recently in town to brief the quality of British wool to Nepalese producers. Britain is the largest wool producer in Europe, with an annual fleece wool of 45-50 million kilos.

Britain exports wool to Belgium, Luxembourg, China and Japan. The British Wool Marketing Board also runs an office in Japan which maintains links with Japanese manufactures.

After few years of recession, Nepalese carpet industries are showing signs of recovery as exports of Nepalese carpet is increasing.
