EDITOR'S NOTE The loss of precious human lives duet Maoist activities has started generating great concern and pain in the minds of many Nepalese. Whether it be the pubic personnel, the Maoists or the general public, untimely deaths must be prevented. It has been a long time (more than five years) the problems that induced the Maoists to take up arms have not been addressed seriously. Since lives of thousands of people have been disrupted, hundreds have lost their lives for no reason and many have left their hearths and homes and become refugees in their own country. In many places controlled by the Maoists, they are even running a parallel government. Recent killings of the police personnel have exposed the helplessness of the government. If Krishna Prasad Bhattarai had to go because there was no law and order in the country haw about Girija Prasad Koirala in whose regime the situation has even worsened. Koirala has to take measures which will check these killings and bring the Maoists to the table for redressal of their grievances. If he fails to do it sooner rather then later, he has go to the way Bhattarai had gone. There can be no other alternative. Killing and lawlessness must stop immediately. The unsubstantiated charges against a cross section of Nepalese intelligence by India Today of associating with the Pakistani intelligence agency, ISI, has aroused the emotions of many Nepalese despite the official assurances by His Majestyís government of Nepal that no unfriendly activities would be permitted against any neighbor from Nepalese soil. India Today chose to completely disregard the assurances and once again has tried to muddle the warming relationship which had become much chilled after the hijack incident some six months back. Safeguarding the territorial integrity of the country is ones own business. If the open border between Nepal and India is posing threat India Today should have suggested to its own government to seal the border. Good journalism will never adhere to sensationalism that is sure to adversely affect the relations between two friendly countries like Nepal and India. It would be in the fitness of things if the government headed by Girija Prasad Koirala made proper investigations on the charges leveled by India Today. After more than five years stay as Indian ambassador, K. V. Rajan has returned to his country. It is reported he is going back to South Block to assume charge as one of the secretaries. Rajan, being a career diplomat tried to give a different kind of thrust to the bilateral relations. He did make some tangible contributions specially in the sphere of trade and transit, in strengthening relations between the two neighbors. Naturally, he, could not resolve all the knotty issues. It must be acknowledged that without hurting his countryís interest he tried to serve Nepalís interest as best as he could. We wish him good luck and do hope his successor, too, will have a successful tenure.
