Striking A Balance

Rogers and Altchison discuss the challenges against sustainable tourism development

By KESHAB POUDEL

At a time when Mount Everest or Sagarmatha, the highest peak of the world is facing serious challenges to strike a balance between nature and tourism, Rogers and Altchsion have come up with an idea about sustainable tourism in the region.

Sagarmatha is not only a place of vital importance for the global community but is also a center of unique cultural, social and economic values to the people of the Solukhumbu district in particular and Nepal in general.

Although some initiatives have been taken to improve the environment situation in the region, it continues to degrade in the region.

With the initiative of international environmentalists, some parts of the Khumbu region was declared as Sagarmatha National Park in 1976. After the establishment of the park, some strict measures have been taken to regulate the flow of visitors there.

In this book, author duo explain the challenges of tourism to the environment and stress the need to initiate the balancing act to preserve it.

The authors also discuss the different activities taken up by the people in the area and the possible consequences on the social and cultural life.

There are many popular tourist regions in the Himalayas but Khumbu is among one of the most popular for tourists around the world. Tourists are attracted by the majestic peaks and mountains in the Khumbu region.

While tourism has made significant contributions towards the socio-economic development of the region and its people, it has also created adverse impacts on the local environment.

Author duo, through their analytical approach, describe the missing part for sustainable tourism in the region. Their argument is that the fragile eco-system in the region needs to be protected.

The past experiences have shown that excess pressure on the region not only eroded most important eco-system of the region but also threatens the livelihood of the local people.

As the authors have prescribed, there is a need to develop a comprehensive approach to sustainable use for tourism in the region.

One of the important aspects of the book is that it is based on the research and that its findings could prove crucial in our quest to maintain balance in the fragile environment of the Himalayas.

The book could also be helpful to the scholars and other people wanting to know about the challenges for the sustainable tourism in the Khumbu region.

After opening of the Khumbu region for tourism, much harm has already been done. Now the time has come to evaluate the process and identify sustainable ways.
