On Democratic History

Dr. Gautam writes about the history of democratic movement in Nepal

By KESHAB POUDEL

After Rana regime was overthrown, different political parties emerged but only a few of them could manage mention in the history.

After the Kot massacre of 1846 AD, Nepalese history witnessed a series of actions taken to overthrow Rana oligarchy. The first seventy-five years of Rana rule was largely unchallenged. But it was after the first world war that Nepalese also realized the importance of freedom.

In this context, the offsprings of people from the upper-class, who went to study in India, were inspired by the freedom struggle launched by Indian political leaders.

Before 1940s the movement against Rana regime was not so strong and organized. It was only after India gained independence from British empire when anti-Rana regime movement gained momentum here.

Although it is one of the oldest political organization in the country, only a few people are acquainted with the important role played by Prachanda Gorkha. The role of Prachanda Gorkha was overshadowed by the emergence of Nepal Praja Parishad.

Dr. Gautam's research reveals that the history of democratic movement in Nepal is incomplete without describing the role of Prachanda Gorkha- a political party constituted by some Nepalese youths. Historians see birth of Prachanda Gorkha as the inspiration from Russian revolution.

With the effort from historian scholar Dr. Rajesh Gautam, a book has been recently published presenting the facts and reality of Prachanda Gorkha.

Published by Nepal and Asian Studies, the book is the first of its kind which compiles detailed aspects of Prachanda Gorkha and its leaders.

The book records the period between 1931-1950 (1988-2007 BS) when different movements were launched against the atrocity of the Rana regime. Dr. Gautam has already published several books on Nepalese history in the past.

In the new book, Dr. Gautam focuses on the short chapter of Nepalese history of political renaissance. It is important to note that Dr. Gautam's research has brought forward names of some individuals whose role were not mentioned in other history books.

Dr. Gautam also encloses some important historical documents in the book as a part of reference material.

In a country like Nepal where the collection of historical documents is poor but Dr. Gautam has enclosed almost all documents to prove his arguments.
