EDITOR'S NOTE
The farcical drama played by
Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala in forcing the Maoist leader Dinesh Sharma and his
colleague to face an orchestrated press conference has not only confirmed our suspicious
about his bona fide in solving the vexing problem peacefully but further vitiated the
distressing situation. The statement by Sharma that he and his colleague were subjected to
severe third degree treatment and in human behavior during their incarceration would only
damage the possibilities of further dialogues. A hardened anti-communist who is hell bent
to decimate the Maoists, that Koirala would sit down with them for peaceful dialogue had
come as a big surprise to us. Perhaps those who knew Koirala well might have been though
his designs. If Sher Bahadur Deuba had to fail in his mission, how could Rama Chandra
Poudel hope to succeed? They both must have fat big electric shocks that might deter them
from harboring soaring ambitious. Since the second grade leaders in Nepali Congress
neither can match the wile and guile of their senior leader not can they muster the money
and muscle he does, it would be nothing but suicidal for them to try to dethrone him.
Moreover, in a poor country like Nepal where politicians are completely unaware about
virtues like ethics, morality, fair play and patriotism, nothing but money howsoever
tainted or unclean plays the over riding role. They must know this since they too have
exposed their love for easy money. As such there is not alternative but to bide time. And
now, since he has announced his candidature for the Presidentship of his party if any body
thinks he stands a chance to bring a change in the Nepali Congress leadership he would be
living in the fool's paradise. The present second generation leadership in the Nepali
Congress do not possess the character or Charisma to command any respect. They are only
satellites of the two established leaders. So, they do not deserve to go to the top. As
far the country or the Maoist problem is concerned, we are in a critical situation. The
messiah who could safeguard democracy, arrest the rot plaguing the country and solve the
Maoist problem is very patiently watching the situation. The nation is waiting for his
patience to exhaust so that he would precipitately act. As the common proverb goes he
might be waiting for the "pitcher of sin" to become full to the brim. In the
meantime, we would still like to appeal to all concerned and all patriotic elements not to
indulge in senseless violence but to unite to fight the evil and deliver the country from
the agonizing misrule.
Kudos to the Supreme Court. By
its historic decision to cut the self-oriented parliamentarians to their size, the Supreme
Court has revived the faith of the common man in the judiciary. The final arbiter of
Justice should always stay as a temple, above politics, above corruption and above all
personal consideration. The people of Nepal have again started looking up to the apex
court with renewed hope. We do trust the court will not only come to the succor of the
poor man but will keep on striving to preserve the integrity of the country and no more
succumb to weaknesses that might tarnish its image in any manner.
