Open Up The North

Due to the modern development, the geographical difficulties have been considerably overcome by the technological innovations. In that light, it is proper for Nepal to explore more possibilities of taking advantage of its border with China on the north (Unshakeable Foundation Spotlight September 1). At present Nepal's trade with China is heavily in favor of the latter, but given the sound government policies and right approach from the Nepalese entrepreneurs, we, too, can market our products via the north. The Nepalese government needs to identify more transit points for the viable commercial transaction between the two countries.

A Good Insight

At a time when Nepalese media are preoccupied with Nepal-India relations, your magazine did a good thing by writing on Nepal-China relations (Unshakeable Foundation Spotlight September 1). It has been felt that we are not giving due recognition to our ties with the huge northern neighbor. Because of our geographic limitations, we could not give much attention to China. But times are changing and the change demands we should also change our age-old viewpoints to explore the opportunities thrown by the present day technological advancements.

Reduce Indian Domination

Nepal must strengthen its ties with China to lessen the influence and domination by India (Unshakeable Foundation September 1). While Nepal cannot afford to be complacent about either of the two neighbor's security concerns, for the sake of economic development Nepal has to find new ways to diversify its trade with China so as to lessen her dependence on India. To become self-sustaining economy, Nepal must develop its trade targeting the huge Chinese market.

Build Infrastructure

It is beyond doubt that Nepal has to increase its trade with China, but what is equally beyond doubt is the fact that Nepal and China need to build necessary infrastructure before the two neighbors can considerably increase their bilateral trade (Unshakeable Foundation Spotlight September 1). Proper road network, financial infrastructures like banking, insurance and other facilities and good communication link is absolutely vital for the sound development of trade.

Positive Seminar

Law is the only one medium which brings about discipline in a society. Law is important for maintaining peace and stability in a country, for providing social justice, for strengthening humanity, and for promoting friendship and understanding among the people of the country .And, in this context, Arbitration(For Quicker Justice August 25) is a quasi-judicial method of resolving disputes which is, in many ways, better than the traditional judicial methods. As compared to the former, it is less costly, less expensive, less complicated and the awards quite easy to understand. Moreover, there is the advantage of having privacy. Thus, it is good to know that a seminar was recently organized by top legal experts of the country on alternative dispute settlements calling for amendment in the Arbitration Act. Nepal has yet to enact and amend laws covering very many important issues. And, even the existing provisions are inadequate to cover many areas. So, I am very positive that seminars like this will eventually produce the desired results and justice will be rendered to one and all!

Koirala's Clan

So it is the few members of Koirala's kitchen cabinet who are calling the shots (All The Prime Minister's Men Spotlight August 25). While it is not unnatural for any leader to have a few persons around on whom he depends, it is strange when the leader depends only on them. What adds to the problem regarding Koirala is that the persons around him are all his relatives and is, therefore, not digestible to many. Rather than heavily relying on his relatives, Koirala should appoint professionals who can give him expert advice on matters like foreign policy, domestic administration as well as managing party affairs.

Safe Air

Your article on air safety (Pull Up, Terrain Spotlight August 25) provided some knowledge on why so many air accidents occur in Nepal. Indeed, our capital's geographical built does not exactly help air transport. The high hills and mountains always pose a risk. The authorities must take up these issues in mind and make corresponding security arrangements. The terrain warning system must be fixed in each and every plane that flies here. This kind of security arrangement will go a long way in making our air as safe as possible.
