LIMERICK Mani Dixit's new book reflects the frustration in present day Nepal By A CORRESPONDENT Although he is professionally a doctor, Dr. Hemang Mani Dixit known as Mani Dixit has proved his capability of being a good writer. In his recent book Nonsense Verses From Nepal, Dixit portrays the real faces of various individuals including the politicians of contemporary society and later days. His observations of different individuals reflect the frustration and anger in the mind of Nepalese regarding the politicians who have ruled the country. "Thinking along the lines it dawned on me that the politicians before the andolan (movement) of 1989\1990 were no different than their counterparts today," said Dixit in his introductory paragraph. In his nonsense verses, the author depicts 153 different characters from Gautam Buddha and Janak to present day politicians. In his witty language Dixit makes a beautiful caricature of his characters. He takes a sample of politicians from the course of the last fifty years. Although in the limerick style, the author does succinctly describe them. "Thinking that restricting the limerick to the politicians might make them feel too important, I decided to include some litterateurs and other personalities from the Nepalese firmament," said Dixit. Like his earlier books, Dixit has shown that he has a good command over the issues of Nepalese politics, history and society. When he describes characters, there is a spontaneous feeling of the real character. He portrays Congress leader Krishna Prasad Bhattarai as a Banarasi Babu and talks about his favorite habit of drinking whisky. Dixit includes personalities from history, religion, literature, sports, academics, industrialists, local Nepalese and visiting expatriates. Dixit's expressions are so powerful and witty that one can taste the reap of literature as well as gain knowledge about the behavior of people from different walks of life of contemporary society.
It is very difficult to express the characters of individuals in such short limericks but Dixit figures out ways to project them in his book.
