EDITOR'S NOTE

The inevitable has happened. Just when the country was gearing up to celebrate Dashain, the tragedy at Dolpa has plunged it into the greatest and saddest tragedy. For the last two years, we have been exhorting the Nepali Congress governments to start a dialogue with Dr. Baburam Bhattarai. They deputed an imbecile who has proved his incredibility beyond a ray of doubt and naturally he failed miserably in his mission. Maybe the government was not sincere to deal with the Maoists. That would give them some pretence to appropriate big budget which they did. While the whole country has been pleading to tackle the issue politically, the establishment has always indicted the Maoists as terriorists. Since we smelled some kind of rat in the intentions of the government, we had humbly exhorted the king to take necessary steps without delay. But, the constitutional monarch seemed unwilling to transgress his constitutional parameter. Strict adherence even to the faulty constitution seems to be more indispensable to the palace than preserving the integrity of the country. It is still not too late. Before the whole country is engulfed in a civil war, the king has no option but to act. If the country is to retain its democratic character, the corrupt and anti-national politicians must be dealt with severely. The water has begun getting over the head. The Maoists have posed a big challegeto the government. Since the rulers are least interested in the welfare of the country and the people, they will not be able to meet the Maoist challenge. The Maoists, we do trust, are quite amenable to peaceful dialogues, if they are asked to deal with honest and honorable men. The politicians must be very busy with their wining and dining in this festive season. They may not find time for negotiations nor would they think it at all necessary to wipe the tears of those families who have lost their dear ones. Since we are helpless to do anything more, we sincerely share thier grief and mourn in their irreparable loss and pray they will have the courage and patience to bear what has befallen on them.

The annual festival of Dashain of the Nepalese people is just a few days away. It is the festival for which a Nepali family waits for impatiently and expectantly. It is a time for family reunion, a time to rejoice and a time to make merry. It is a time when good prevails over evil, when happiness prevails over misery and when friendly feelings prevail over enmity and animosities. But for the overwhelming poor Nepalese Dashain brings nothing but debts and more debts. How many Nepalese faimilies can join for reunion, how many may rejoice and make merry nobody can say for sure. Of course, the politicians belong to a different breed. They have already started celebrating Dashain. They can afford. They have no worries. As if Dashain comes for them only. But all those unfortunates who cannot celebrate their Dashain in a befitting manner, they too have not lost their hearts. They are rich in their faith. They are rich in their hopes. They do beleive that as the Benign Mother destroyed the demon, some good man will emerge to destroy all the enemies of the country and the people. To all those millions of poor and unfortunates we wish them Happy Dashain and advise them to bide their times. Their day is not far off. Durga Bhawani is sure to come to their rescue. So, forget your miseries fo the moment and do rejoice. Pray to Ma to give some wisdom to the evil men, if possible. Since it is a time when no body should wish ill of any one. we also join the chorus and say "Happy Dashain, Happy Vijaya".
