Greater Is Better The idea of greater Kathmandu sounds plausible (How Practical? Spotlight September 22). The surge in the population of the Kathmandu city has rendered it highly congested and therefore difficult to manage. By integrating the neighboring small cities into the Kathmandu unit, the city can enjoy more breathing space by distributing its facilities. The concept is very much practical as similar steps have been taken to expand bigger cities around the world. Krishna Kharel Clean The Mess Kathmandu Valley today has become one big mess. It is strange why the mayor talks about concepts of Greater Kathmandu when he has failed to manage even the "smaller one" (How Practical? Spotlight September 22). The mayor should first clear up the garbage instead of harping on bigger issues. Sabita Sharma Develop Satellite Towns To relieve the Kathmandu metropolitan of the present burden, it is utmost to develop the satellite towns like Banepa and Dhulikhel (How Practical? Spotlight September 22). This time round the officials would do better if they plan beforehand about the matters like drainage system, drinking water supply etc. A carefully planned layout of satellite towns would make it easy and more practical to integrate them with the mother town. Kedar Bhattarai Restore The Image Kathmandu is fast losing its traditional image as town of temples (How Practical? Spotlight September 22). With concrete jungle usurping the traditional outlook, the city is losing its aesthetic beauty. In such a backdrop, the attention of the authorities should be focussed at restoring the image of the capital city rather than anything else. Subarna Thapa Hero In The Dark None of the leaders of the Congress tire of harping about their leader B.P. Koirala's vision and contribution (Forgotten Hero Spotlight September 15). But when it comes to actually implementing their leader's vision, they turn deaf and blind. For the most part of the last one decade of restoration of democracy, Nepali Congress has been in power. So, where can the people see Koirala's vision being implemented? Are the congress leaders trying to fool the people? There is a popular saying that you can fool some of the people all of the time, all of the people some of the time but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time. Is any Congressman listening? Dhruba Shrestha Saving Lives? The cases of quacks ruining the lives of patients have dealt a serious blow to the credibility of institution like Nepal Medical Council (Quacks Concerns Spotlight September 15). What is intriguing is that the person of the capacity of the Council's President himself has been seen performing operations alongside a quack. What does this mean? Is the person in question Mr. Bhoj Raj Joshi simply too dumb or is he working hand in gloves with quacks like Shastri? This is a serious issue concerning the lives of people. Nobody can be allowed to play with the lives of people. The responsible authorities must take action against the culprits immediately and restore the people's faith in doctors. Anup Bhattarai Year After Year The outbreak of encephalitis hits the Terai region of the country with horrifying regularity year after year (The Toll Goes On Spotlight September 8). It is also said that encephalitis kills maximum Nepalese after floods and landslides. But nobody is taking the issue seriously. Aren't there any ways to control this disease? Maybe we can do something to be better prepared when the disease strikes next year. Navin KC |
