Intermediate Technology Development Group (ITDG) Nepal, a non-governmental organization, organized a consultative meeting of the promoters of Households Composting Technology last week.

As ITDG works in appropriate technology area, it aims to look for the opportunities in existing technology modification. The main objective of the meeting was to discuss about the technological problems that the promoters of household composting technology feel and where ITDG Nepal could play a role to improve the technology. Altogether 12 individuals consisting of household promoters and composting experts actively participated in the meeting, and discussed about the technology they are working with, the economics of household composting and the need for the technological intervention.

Among the organizations represented in the consultative meeting were Ce Pro In, WEPCO, SAGUN, Save the Children Norway, CEE, HJS, ADAN, CSSC and Daphne paper.

The meeting agreed that there are rooms for technical intervention in composting technology but they should be identified by a group of technical experts practically involved in the promotional works. Different models targeted to different income groups and housing environment should be designed and demonstrated for public choice, said the participating experts. Both the local and central government must be committed for the development and promotion of composting technology to make it successful and sustainable, they said. More importantly, since a project approach can't solve the problem of waste management, a long term approach is needed, they concluded.
