The 12th Himalayan Expo 2002 (August 21-24), organized last week by the regular host of the show, House of Rajkarnicar, brought a breath of fresh air to an economy in the doldrums both in the external and internal markets. Due to various reasons, the expo was delayed by four months.

Many national and multinational companies took part in the expo. About 150 stalls were put up during the four-day exhibition. Out of 140 participants, 70 percent were from multinational companies. The expo was intended to increase the market of products in Nepal, rather than selling products on the spot. The American, British, German and French pavilions were the main attractions. The coffee stall put up by district cooperative of Gulmi also drew throngs of visitors.

Manufacturers of daily consumer items, like Nepal lever Limited, and producers of automobiles took the chance not only to recognize the Nepalese market but also to find regional agents to promote their sales. The French car company was the first to enter the Nepalese market. A Malaysian company that did not participate in the expo, too, took the advantage by discovering consumer's taste for water purifying equipment and electrical light.

But the participation of consumers did not seem as exciting as last year. "Maybe it's because of the weather and the depreciation in consumer incomes since last year," a keen visitor said. On the contrary, the director of the House of Rajkarnicar, Suman Rajkarnicar claimed participation was satisfactory. "More than 40,000 visitors came to the exhibition."

Birendra Rajkarnicar from the House said, "The participation of so many multinational companies and visitors, including 20,000 from the business sector, despite the state of emergency and the economic slump, has proved the importance of the expo." He thanked the official sponsors and the participants for their support to organizing the expo successfully.
