Magician Nepal

CPN-UML general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal seems set on bolstering his politics by unveiling his magical powers. Nepal claims he has the power to produce a natural storm big enough to flush out everyone in front of him. This is not the first time the UML leader has asserted his mystical abilities. His claim struck many people as surprising this time, though, because it came in the context of the country's current political crisis. After all, Nepal was among those who urged then-prime minister Sher Bahadur Deuba to postpone the November 13 elections citing the Maoist threat, which precipitated the crisis. Nobody knows whether Nepal, whose ideology is premised on atheism, can do what he says he can. As a son of an orthodox Brahmin, though, he may have the blessings of the Almighty in ways we don't know. In any case, let's see who flushes out whom during this cold winter.

Koirala's Confession

The good thing about Nepali Congress leader Girija Prasad Koirala is that he doesn't hesitate to acknowledge his mistakes. But the problem is that he does so when it's too late to do anything. Had Koirala realized the consequences of his decision to expel one-time protÈgÈ Sher Bahadur Deuba from the party, Koirala wouldn't have had to confess in front of thousands of people that he committed a great blunder in splitting the Nepali Congress. It's now time for Koirala to disclose why he expelled Deuba from the party and did all those other things to destabilize the country.

Chand's Plea

While Nepali Congress president Girija Prasad Koirala and CPN-UML general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal are on whirlwind tours to rally support against the palace, Prime Minister Lokendra Bahadur Chand is busy wooing gods and goddesses. In the last couple of weeks, Chand, who spends several hours in puja each day, has fanned across temples in search of political strength. Will he be able to secure his position in such difficult circumstances through divine intervention? Who knows?

Unique Democracy

CPN-UML leaders have established that they are unique in words and deed. Despite their ideological leanings toward Stalin, Lenin and Mao, UML leaders are trying to prove they are die-hard democrats. A leader like Nepali Congress president Girija Prasad Koirala, who is still portrayed as an anti-communist, seeks the advice of UML general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal on major national issues. UML leader Keshab Badal recently announced that no leader would meet the King and foreign dignitaries without prior permission of the party standing committee. This move is ostensibly aimed at ensuring that discussions do not veer away from the official party line. A party of unique comrades, the UML has established unique democracy.

RPP Secret

While his three rivals for the party presidency are campaigning across the country, Rastriya Prajatantra Party leader Padma Sunder Lawati is happily ensconced in Kathmandu. Lawati seems to know what Prakash Chandra Lohani Pashupati Sumshere J.B. Rana and Rabindra Nath Sharma don't - that the blessings of Surya Bahadur Thapa and Lokendra Bahadur Chand are all that counts. As the final vote will be determined by the maneuvering of the top leaders, Lawati appears to have concluded there is no sense in knocking the doors of party offices in the districts. Let's see whether the formula work.
