ALL THE FOUR COMMITTEES of the National Assembly (NA), the Upper House of the parliament, have demanded that the session of the NA be convened immediately. They said that at a time when the House of Representatives has been dissolved and the tenure of the elected office bearers of the local bodies' has been expired, the session of the constitutional body should be convened immediately. They have called upon the Chairman of the National Assembly, Dr. Mohammed Mohsin, and the government to fix date for the session. Leader of the CPN (UML) in the Upper House, Yubaraj Gyawali, said that the session of NA should be convened immediately to discuss burning issues of the country including Maoist insurgency and find solution through national consensus.


IN A BLAST THAT  rocked a restaurant in Sainbu, Bhainsepati, on the southern fringe of the Kathmandu valley on Saturday, ten people were injured. Police suspect Maoist hand in the evening blast. According to reports a group of six to seven people barged in the Karyabinayak restaurant, took control of the place and exploded a pressure cooker bomb. Security forces have launched an intense search to nab the absconding miscreants.


LESS THAN 24 HOURS of their top leadership announcing that they have constituted a dialogue committee, Maoist rebels mounted attacks at two police posts near Mahendra highway, reports said. At least three policemen were killed when the rebels attacked a police post in eastern terai district of Siraha late Wednesday. The details were still awaited. Meanwhile, the state-owned Radio Nepal said that a group of armed Maoist rebels exploded bomb at a police post at the ilaka police post at Chandrauta in Kapilvastu district bordering India. Nobody was injured in the attacks as 15 policemen manning the post had left for "regular patrol," the report said.


MALVIKA SUBBA HAS BAGGED THE Miss Nepal 2002 title in the annual beauty pageant organized by Hidden Treasures Nepal on Saturday. Subba also won the title awards of Miss Personality, Miss Talent and Miss Best Hair. Pinky Shah was judged the first runner-up and Lhamo Yangchen Sherpa the second runner-up. Subba won the crown beating 15 other contestants. Talking to reporters after winning the pageant, Subba said she wanted to work towards creating awareness against HIV/AIDS. She also said she did not intend to work in films. Many former Miss Nepal winners have shown interest to try their luck in the silver-screen.


LOCAL ADMINISTRATION in eastern hilly district of Tehrathum has said that the fire that gutted millions of rupee worth property at the district headquarters of Myanglung has been brought to control Monday morning. Talking to the state-owned Radio Nepal, chief district officer of Tehrathum, Hari Lochan Sharma, said that the local administration has already started emergency relief works for the local residents. The massive blaze, that  swept through Myanglung Bazar since Sunday evening, gutted over one hundred houses in the town. Nobody has been reported injured in the incident. The fire was reportedly caused due to short circuit at a local tailor shop.


AGRICULTURE DEVELOPMENT Bank of Nepal and International Development Enterprise, an INGO, have reached a three-year agreement to develop and disseminate low-cost technologies that would help boost productivity, income and skills of people in rural areas. As per the agreement, the IDE-Nepal will invest more than USD 10 million in the hills and plains of Nepal for integrated small-holder market development through mass marketing of small-scale irrigation systems and other necessary inputs. IDE-Nepal has promoted the use of human-powered treadle pumps in 14 terai districts and low-cost drip and micro-sprinkler irrigation systems in 11 hill districts in eastern and western Nepal.
