OFF THE RECORD

Super Times

With the indefinite closure of the education institutions on the call of pro-Maoist student union, the valley's supermarkets have seen upsurge of buyers. Almost all outlets are packed with children and teenagers. Since there is virtually no place for creativity, the supermarket seems to be best place to spend time. This undeclared winter vacation seems to be a boom for the supermarkets whose business has suffered a lot for the last one year due to the frequent disturbance created by the CPN-Maoists. This is jubilant times for the owners of the supermarket.

Pokhara Boom

The third convention of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party gave a boost to the tourist town of Pokhara. With the upsurge of Maoist violence and imposition of the state of emergency, the city has witnessed a perennially low number of domestic and foreign tourists. Despite the efforts of the government, the stars hotels have yet to find tourists. But the third national convention of the RPP brought joy to the city, as a large number of RPP workers booked almost all hotels there. VIPs, including Prime Minister Lokendra Bahadur Chand and other leaders of RPP, occupied star and non-star hotels, but no one can say how much business the jamboree brought to Pokhara.

RPP Gains

It seems that the bigger parties - Nepali Congress and CPN-UML - sent high-level representatives to the third convention of the RPP. Whatever other parties claim, the mass gathering of the RPP shows that the party of former panchas is gradually moving ahead in national politics. In all their conventions, the RPP has been bringing in large crowds to prove its popularity. But its ability to win votes still remains limited.

Nepal Enigma

CPN-UML general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal has emerged as a crowd-puller. Nobody understands the rationale behind his decision to request the postponement of the general elections a few months ago. If he can pull such large crowds, what prompted him to sign the letter calling for the postponement of the elections? Projected as the next prime minister, Nepal has definitely enhanced his personal abilities. Had the elections been held on schedule, nobody could have stopped him from taking the reins of Singh Durbar. Will he fulfil his dream?

Media Manners

The Hidden Treasurers-Nepal is well organized and well-established institution specializing in holding the Miss Nepal contest, but it still has to learn how to manage the media. Instead of enhancing public awareness though the media, the organizers are more interested in making profits. This may be the reason why they opened the show only to those media representatives who were willing to pay their way. If they want media coverage, the organizers must make proper arrangements for journalists.

Miss Different

Despite the chaotic situation, violence and uncertainty, Malvika Subba has bagged the Miss Nepal title. Unlike previous years, the new Miss Nepal has not had to face the controversy. Subba declared that she would not act in films. It seems the failure stories of her predecessors Rubi Rana and Jharna Bajracharya taught her not to switch to films. Malvika's public announcement to work in favor of HIV/AIDS shows she is different.
