Portrait Of Diversity Artist Asha Dangol brings
alive a vast array of Nepalese folk images By A CORRESPONDENT With its diverse ethnic, linguistic,
religious and cultural values, Nepal has maintained a separate identity in the community
of nations. As various ethnic groups practice different religions and live their own
cultural lives, the nation's identity is in a continual process of enrichment. Portraying folk images of a country as
varied as Nepal is in itself a mammoth challenge. Attired in a variety of colorful dresses
individually representing the hills, plains, mountains and valleys, the Nepalese people
constitute a melange of cultural opulence on the canvas. Asha Dangol has endeavored to depict the
depth of this cultural chest through her paintings. Jan de Witte, honorary consul for the
Netherlands and director of the SNV, Netherlands Development Organization, inaugurated a
solo exhibition of Dangol in which she displays the folk images of the kingdom. Her
paintings pay particular attention to women and their way of life. Dangol's works provide an exquisite
representation of typical Nepali households. Moreover, she succeeds in capturing some of
the feelings and the surroundings of her subjects. Dangol uses her colors with great
imagination and caution. Although some of her works seem to have lost a sense of
continuity, Dangol has made every effort to bring them as close to reality as possible. "I have concentrated my efforts on
putting the faces and surroundings of people on canvas as they exist. Along with painting
images of people, I have also tried to bring to life the activities they do," Dangol
said at a press conference. Organized by Siddhartha Art Gallery, one of
the important highlights of the solo art exhibition is its sharp focus on Nepalese
religion and culture. Dangol's paintings vividly bring to the fore the Nepalese way of
life. "One of the objectives of the painting exhibition is to show how colorful and how different the life of the Nepalese people is," said Dangol. Although some of her sketches are less clear than others, Dangol's series encompass a rich spectrum of Nepalese life. |
