Reality Bites Your cover story "Ignoring the Real
Issues" (SPOTLIGHT, February 1) has aptly pointed out that the country's development
plans should take into consideration the existing geo-political and strategic factors.
Only then can any project be successfully implemented. The fact that we forgot to take
these into consideration in the past is one reason why our pace of development and
economic prosperity has been so slow. Jitendra Bista Talking Shop Unless and until donors and Nepalese
authorities put all factors in their proper perspective, this year's meeting of Nepal
Development Forum (NDF), too, could end up as a mere talking shop ("Ignoring
the Real Issues", SPOTLIGHT February 1). The NDF meeting has thrown up a special
opportunity to assess the development of the country over the last few decades. Everybody
should be willing to learn from the mistakes of the past. Kiran Baidya Seeing Is Believing As this year's NDF meeting is going to be
held in Nepal, it is going to provide donors with first-hand information on the state of
the development process here ("Ignoring the Real Issues", SPOTLIGHT,
February 1). They will be able to see for themselves the progress made or not made in
Nepal. Hopefully, they will acquire enough knowledge to impart future donations
judiciously and in a manner that would benefit the poor Nepalese people, and not a handful
of corrupt officials. Gita Shrestha Another Plan The National Planning Commission is already
working on the Tenth Plan to develop the country ("Endorsing Tenth Plan",
SPOTLIGHT, January 25). How successful have past plans been is another matter altogether.
Once again, poverty alleviation remains the topmost priority. However, with the
growing problems of security, development issues are taking a back seat. The country is in
a tricky position. Only capable leadership would be able to handle it. Sitaram KC Exemplary Lady The works of Anuradha Koirala have drawn
praises from all over the country ("Rescue And Relief", SPOTLIGHT, January 25).
She is the true role model for Nepalese society. In today's crowd of selfish politicians,
she shines. Other social activists should learn from her achievements and help society in
a similar way. It is people like Koirala who instil positive confidence in the people. Her
contributions cannot be bound by political demarcations. Women of the whole world owe
gratitude to people like Anuradha Koirala. Jeevan Shrestha More News From Outside Your stories on issues and events of
districts outside Kathmandu valley are always welcome. The one you featured on Bara
("Foggy Future", SPOTLIGHT, January 18) was excellent. Readers rarely get to
read objective reporting of developments in the districts. This has made everything
Kathmandu-centric. We expect more such reporting in your magazine in the days ahead. Navin Guragain |
