EDITORIAL

One year has passed since the death of King Birendra. A large number of people from all strata of the population have paid homage to the late King  and other royal family members killed on the night of June 1, 2001. King Birendra is history. He was a good and popular King. It is dangerous to be too good, which was proved by the circumstances of King Birendraís death. In the midst of such tragedy, Nepal got King Gyanendra on the throne, who is  driving the institution of monarchy very carefully in a situation when the  country is being totally ruined by corrupt and anti-national politicians. With his maturity, experience and decisiveness, King Gyanendra has injected  hope in the people that Nepal will stabilize again. True respect to King Birendra would now be to strengthen the hands of the new monarch. History   and posterity will naturally assess late King Birendraís merit and demerits.   At this juncture, the purest homage that we can pay to the late King will be   to act honestly, with dedication and patriotically. The country is on the   brink of destruction. Instead of singing eulogies, we should unite to save   the country and uplift the poor people. That would be the biggest tribute to King Birendra. The volumes of eulogy that have been appearing in all sections of society seem to smack of sycophancy and hypocrisy. A person who believes in good thoughts and actions need not take recourse to blunt accolade. It is time for all Nepalis to strengthen the hands of the new King so that he will be able to solve the gigantic problems the country is  facing.

What Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba is doing is not important. The only  thing he can do is stand up against Girija Prasad Koirala and expose him in toto. The civil war that has claimed so many human lives and has virtually ruined the country economically is the result of the corrupt misgovernance   of Girija Prasad Koirala when he was the prime minister. In the past,  Koirala always joined hands with alien forces to destabilize the country. Maybe Koirala is being aided and abetted by some invisible forces this time as well. Otherwise, there is no reason for him to destabilize his party and speak against respected institutions of the country.
