'NEPAL BANDH'

A Routine Show

The Maoist called shutdown strike passes of claiming four lives

By A CORRESPONDENT

The 'bandh' called by the underground Maoist party on Monday (Sep. 16)  "to protest against the forthcoming polls" gave one more reason for the underground party's cadres-- now graduating in murder and explosions-to be engaged in a senseless violence. Four people, including a police constable, were killed during the bandh. Shiva Pariyar, a young woman, died and two others including a 10-year-old girl child were injured when a bomb thrown by the rebels missed a taxi but exploded at a rural household at Hyangja VDC in
Kaski district. A police constable, Hemnath Thapaliya, was killed when a bomb exploded in the premises of Sindhupalchok prison. In yet another incident, a person was killed and another injured at Panauti early Tuesday. A suspected Maoist rebel was killed in Dang when a grenade exploded in his hand as he was trying to  throw it at a passenger bus.

Life came to standstill in Kathmandu and other parts of the country causing inconvenience to local people as well as the tourists. Chairman of the underground Maoist party, Comrade Prachanda, in a prompt statement, claimed success for the shutdown strike and urged political parties to pressurize the government to resume peace talks. He, however, did not talk anything about the latest spree of killing, abduction and destruction unleashed by his cadres all over the country.
