THE ELECTION COMMISSION (EC) has appointed district judges of all 75 districts as chief election officers in the respective districts in order to carry out election related jobs. The EC has also delineated election constituencies under article 5 of the  House of Representatives Member Election Act-2047 for the forthcoming mid-term elections. The Commission has fixed additional 26 election symbols other than for the political parties and independent candidates registered or recognized under clause 40 of the act. The  Election Commission has also provided election symbols to 22 political parties out of the fixed symbols for the purpose of including those not recognized by the commission or  the 21 out of the 23 registered and one party  which had  not  taken election   symbol in 2053 B. S.

KATHMANDU FESTIVAL -2002, the consumer-oriented trade exhibition got underway at Bhrikuti Mandap here Wednesday for the benefit of the consumers who would be able to purchase essential and consumers goods at the same place.  There are 125 stalls of domestic and foreign consumer goods at the week-long exhibition organized on the eve of the festival of Vijaya Dashami while provisions have also been made for modern cultural programs, food festivals and entertainment for children. Vijaya Dashami is the greatest festival of all Nepalese. 

IN RESPONSE TO THE Govt's   demand for 700 volunteer teachers to teach in schools in Maoist insurgency-hit regions in the country, as many as 20,000 applications have been filed, officials said. According to an official at the Department of Education (DoE), the number could even increase. The government had decided to recruit volunteer teachers on a temporary basis after most of the teachers left their schools in the wake of the rebels targeting the hapless lot..  Most of the schools in districts like Rukum, Rolpa, Salyan, Jajarkot, Gorkha and Surkhet have already been closed, putting the future of thousands of children in jeopardy.  Many school buildings have been destroyed. The Maoists have killed as many as 100 teachers and abducted many others since the beginning of their insurgency six-years ago. Director General at the DoE, Chuman Singh Basnet, said that the process of  enrolment of the volunteer teachers will be finalized by October 17 this year and they will be paid Rs. 2,500-3,000 per month (around USD 40). He, however, did not tell anything about the personal safety of the newly recruited teachers. 

MORE THAN A MONTH month after the raids by the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) at the houses of 22 revenue officials, the revenue collection from Tatopani customs bordering Tibet autonomous region of China has increased by nearly 50 percent, a newspaper report in Kantipur daily said. According to the report, collections from the Tatopani customs have amounted to Rs 127.6 million in the month of Bhadra (Aug-Sep.), up from Rs 87 million collected in the previous month of Srawan (July-August). A businessman admitted that they were paying just double the revenue of what they were paying earlier. General Secretary of the Nepal Trans-Himalaya Traders Association, Keshab Bahadur Rayamajhi, said that the customs official were now treating all the businessmen without any discrimination. 

THE UNITED STATES has agreed to provide a grant assistance of US$ 14.3 million (approx. Rs 1.12 billion) to Nepal for promoting peace through improved governance and incomes in targeted areas of the country. According to Finance Ministry, under the agreement an initial amount of US$ 3.6 million will be disbursed soon by the US and remaining fund will be provide in increments over a period of four years. The grant assistance will be utilized to improve infrastructure and expand employment opportunities in targeted areas, support for rehabilitation and reconstruction programs and technical assistance to strengthen the government's policy decisions and short-term support for local governance, the Ministry said. An agreement to this effect was signed by officiating secretary at the Finance Ministry, Narayan P. Silwal,  US ambassador to Nepal Michael E. Malinowski and director of USAID in Nepal Joanne T. Hale here Sunday, the Ministry said. 

THE 52nd ANNIVERSARY OF Sarada secondary school was organized last Saturday under the chairmanship of Shashi Kumar Pandey, president of school management committee. On the occasion Bal Bahadur K.C., Minister of culture, tourism and civil aviation, distributed awards to the top scoring students in examination and extra curricular activities. Mana Panta, Gita Bhandary, Radha Poudel and Dipanjali Raut were awarded by gold medals for their more than two and a half decade long service in the school. Ravi Lamichhane, principal of the school lauded the service of these teachers and highlighted the school's activities. Kiran Shrestha, vice principal of the school also addressed the gathering and vowed to improve the quality of education and develop Sarada as a leading educational institution in the country.
