Burgeoning Problem The consequences of migration could trigger
not only economic boon but health hazard as well. This is aptly "Boon Or Bane?"
(SPOTLIGHT, March 28). The fact that migrants also carry diseases like HIV positive makes
it a very serious concern for the whole society. The authorities must take steps to
control the hazards of migration. Otherwise, it could snowball into giant problem. Bijaya Shrestha Fallouts Of Migration Despite its negative effects, migration is
a natural phenomenon in course of development of societies. In your cover story "Boon
Or Bane?" (SPOTLIGHT, March 28), you have highlighted only the negative aspects like
spreading of HIV positive. But migration has many economic benefits. Along with
urbanization, migration occurs within the country, too. The movement of people also leads
to greater social intercourse and better understanding among peoples. Ghanashyam Bhattarai Major Issue Although the cover story "Boon Or
Bane?" (SPOTLIGHT, March 28) pointed out the various aspects of migration, the
authorities do not seem to have any plan on how to manage this phenomenon. While migration
as such could be a natural process, the government must note its negative effects like
spreading of diseases like HIV positive seriously. People must be made aware about the
hazards of migration and risks they face. Laxman Gurung Towards Chaos The debate on the election of constituent
assembly ("Futile debate" SPOTLIGHT, March 21) triggered by the Maoists is sure
to take the country towards further instability and chaos. It does not make sense why the
Maoists are demanding the election of constituent assembly. What is wrong with the present
constitution? In fact, there are enough rooms for the rebels to bring about their desired
changes through the amendment of present constitution itself. Because of their obstinacy,
people have started to suspect the real intention behind this singular call for
constituent assembly. It seems that by going for the election of constituent assembly, the
country will be devoid of even the present one. In such a terrifying vacuum, anything can
happen. It will be like opening the Pandoraís Box. Besides, the Maoists have yet to
convince the ordinary Nepalese how their lives will be changed with this. The Nepalese
people have been living in depravation for the last many centuries. Numerous political
parties have told them about their bright future ad nauseum. But in the ground nobody
delivered. Even after the restoration of democracy, the situation of poor rural people did
not change. The Maoists fully exploited this situation. But now it is time for them to
deliver. They must stop delivering lectures now about this or that. The primary thing is
that Nepal must improve its economic condition soon. It would be better if the political
players start talking about their economic agenda. Bharat Bista Gulf Gloom The US-led action against Iraq has
triggered several problems in our country, too ("Threats To Nepal" SPOTLIGHT,
March 21). The shortage of petroleum products and concerns about Nepalese working in the
Gulf has directly affected Nepal. This is also an example how the world has turned into a
global village. Any incident in any part of the world can have affect on the other part.
Nobody can live untouched by happenings in the world. People are praying that this war
will be short and that the misery of Iraqi people will be ended soon. Hikmat Tamang Women's Welfare With reference to "Protection
Plea" (SPOTLIGHT, March 14), setting aside one day of the year for women will not
solve their problems. If the country really wants to provide respect to women, the
government should mobilize resources and develop strategies to organize women,
particularly in the informal economy, by conducting training and educational programs. It
should introduce gender-responsive financial packages and boost the existing short-term
periodic micro-credit project so that women are attracted toward business and can become
self-reliant. In order to enhance women's confidence and dignity and to encourage their
participation in professionals forums, personality development and awareness programs
related with gender issues should be conducted. Women should not be totally dependent on
the government. They should be able to do things by themselves with unity and persistence
to succeed. Binita Pandey |
