BOOK REVIEW

Doctor's Aid

The volume explains complicated medical terminology, making things easier or students and professionals

By A CORRESPONDENT

Over the last decade, more than a dozen medical colleges have been established in different parts of the country. A large number of students are studying in these institutions. Despite the increase in the number of medical colleges and the students, very few books are available that are applicable to the Nepalese context.

Although some medical practitioners involved in the teaching profession have brought out a few books, they remain insufficient to fulfill the requirements of the large number of medical students.

Medical education requires a knowledge base that is specific to the health problems of the country. This side is completely ignored by the authorities while registering the medical colleges. Since Nepalese students have to rely on books published in India and other parts of the world, they are not adequate to guide them in the local setting.

Every country has its own peculiar geographical and climatic situation. Despite its small size, Nepal has a vast variety of ecological zones where the temperature and geographical surroundings are very distinct and different. In the absence of useful books and requisite knowledge, students who enter medical practice face many difficulties.

"Keeping this in mind, the book seems to have addressed all these issues. Students just striding into the clinical phase are in even more quandary about what to read and where to read. Well there are many standard books for that but many of us fail to stress on the basic clinical aspects. Noting this deficiency, we have attempted to put before the students a concise and must know text covering many clinical topics," write the authors.

As soon as the medical students enter the clinical phase, they have to face many complications. The students have to encounter patients with specific complaints and need books to administer proper medicines.

In this stage, most of the medical students feel distraught. Although every medical student acquires necessary knowledge, many of them fail to stress the basic clinical aspects. After encountering many complicated matters, the authors have written the book. "Necessity is the mother of invention. This is the reason we have decided to compiling a multidisciplinary book which include most often basis clinical aspects history making, examination, ray, instruments, clinical procedures, FAQ etc)," the authors say.

The book discusses the procedure and other essential parts of the clinical examination. It explains all necessary procedures in a simple way so that newly joined students do not have to worry.

"As almost all the medical colleges in Nepal are doing community-oriented problem-based learning, I feel that this book will be useful to not only the students of Kathmandu Medical College but to those in the whole Nepal. As history taking skills are required not only by third year student but all first year ones too. I would recommend that this title book should be used by all studying medicine in the Nepali setting," said Professor Dr. Hemang Dixit.

Although the book is a compilation of issues taken from different sources, it brings vital aspects of medical procedure in a highly valuable form.
