Business Polls

With such high visibility schisms and dissensions within the Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), it seems the elections for the post of FNCCI president will be like political polls where candidates engage in back-stabbing, dishonest methods and what not ("FNCCI Elections" SPOTLIGHT, June 13). The reduction of a purely professional organization like the federation into a brazen political machine is nothing but unfortunate. The business community must sit up and clean the mess before it engulfs them all.

Bitter Rivalry

The rivalry within the FNCCI is known to all. The intense disputes within the organization and among various factions come to the fore during the biennial election ("FNCCI Elections" SPOTLIGHT, June 13). There are different camps like Marwari, Newars, inside-Valley and outside-Valley. Each camp pushes itself garnering as much support as possible to win the election. While such intra-organization rivalry may be normal in a huge organization like FNCCI, the business leaders must understand that their fight could kill the organization itself. At a time when several other organizations have sprouted challenging the authority of the federation, it is in the interest of the business community to exhibit unity among themselves. This can be achieved by sticking to the tradition of choosing leadership through consensus. If that is not possible, then at least the candidates should not engage in character assassination or other similar immoral means to win the election. Otherwise, the organization will land into needless controversy that will haunt it for years to come. Besides, we can do without such harmful controversy in the business sector at a time when the whole country is looking up to the sector for the development of national economy.

Significant Results

The result of the FNCCI elections will have a direct impact on the national economy in that it throws up the leadership of the business community who are at the forefront of leading the national economic development ("FNCCI Elections" SPOTLIGHT, June 13). It is, therefore, not a trifle issue. Election of capable leadership will definitely help the ailing Nepalese economy that is in the dire need of such guardianship. With the able leadership, the FNCCI will be able to better lobby for its interests as well as act in an effective manner in finding out ways to expand the economy. Besides, it will also be able to close the gaps of huge trade deficit by exploring new markets for Nepalese export products.

Shrestha Vs. Shrestha

The interview of the two candidates for the post of president of the FNCCI shows that there is little difference between them as far as their agenda is concerned ("FNCCI Elections" SPOTLIGHT, June 13). Both believe there ought to be drastic change in economic policies, both are for liberalization of economy and so on. Hence, it seems the amount of personal clout and power of behind-the-scene lobbyists will ultimately decide who will win it. Moreover, it will also set a bad precedent for future FNCCI elections. Rather than based on such whimsical factors, the business community should be electing their leaders based on merit and experience.

Soft Stories

It would be great if your esteemed magazine continues to cover soft stories like music, films and sports more often. The cover story on music ("Scoring Success" SPOTLIGHT May 30) was a good one as it provided a lot of interesting facts about the Nepalese music industry. The article depicted how the industry is growing. The interviews of the artistes, too, were informative. It was great to learn that Nepalese music is gradually replacing the foreign tunes.

Digital Reforms

The story about the reforms in the power sector in Andhra Pradesh, India Showed how the information technology can be put to use to achieve results in the field ("Digital Dazzle" SPOTLIGHT June 6). The article also showed how a committed and dedicated political leadership could deliver fruits of development. Our leaders should take these developments in next-door neighboring country as lessons as well. There is no reason why the same technology cannot work here provided the infrastructure and political commitment.

Take Heart

The change in lifestyle and nutritional habits for heart patients have been universally acknowledged as a major factor to determine the course of their ailment ("Taking Control" SPOTLIGHT June 6). It is of utter necessity that patients are made aware about the type of nutritional habit they should stick to as well as exercises they should engage in, in order to sail over the disease. Heart disease is getting to become one of the major public health problems in Nepal. Naturally, health officials need to carry out major campaign to sensitize the population about the heart hazards and ways to prevent such ailments.
