Mountain Madness So many people have climbed Mount Everest
because it is there ("Celebrations Unlimited" SPOTLIGHT May 23). It is
unbelievable that with the help of modern climbing gears and equipments around 1100 people
have already climbed the roof of the world. The undiminished attraction of the Everest
stands testimony to the human desire to conquer nature. Binod Shrestha Select Permits It seems time is ripe for the Nepalese
government to decide on fixing ceiling about the number of expeditions that will be
allowed to climb Mount Everest ("Celebrations Unlimited" SPOTLIGHT May 23). The
growing number of mountaineers attempting to climb it is definitely going to have a
negative impact on the spirit of adventure. Besides, it will also affect the environment
of mountain region. For the long term and sustainable development of adventure tourism, it
would be better to check the number of mountaineers. In fact, it would make sense if the
authorities made efforts to make various other pristine peaks popular among alpinists. Rita KC Environment Concerns As a large number of climbers attempt to
scale the Everest this year, there is a concern that the volume of garbage in the region
will increase ("Celebrations Unlimited" SPOTLGHT May 23). It would have been
fitting if some expedition team had taken out a clean up campaign to mark the golden
jubilee celebrations. Anyway, I hope that such clean up campaign will be held immediately
after the celebrations. If no private sector expedition comes forward, the government
itself should organize such campaign. Yam Prasad Chalise Earning The Mileage The Nepalese government does not seem to
have taken many steps to earn mileage out of the international attention Nepal is getting
for the golden jubilee celebrations of the first ascent of Mount Everest
("Celebrations Unlimited" SPOTLIGHT May 23). Currently scores of media persons
from prestigious international media agencies have gathered in the country to cover the
events. Nepalese government should have taken advantage of this. For instance, the tourism
board would do well by organizing familiarization trips to these press people to tourist
spots of the country. It would provide a great opportunity to market various tourist spots
like Pokhara, Chitawan, Annapurna region trekking and so on. But the initial indications
point that the government is as indifferent as ever. Though it did invite hundreds of
former foreign Everesters, it failed in tapping the potentials thrown open by the presence
of such a huge gathering of foreign media. Lilanath Parajuli Nepal Loves Hillary Sir Edmund Hillary who along with Tenzing
Norgay Sherpa climbed the Everest for the first time in 1953 is truly a remarkable person
who deserves the honorary citizenship of Nepal ("Celebrations Unlimited"
SPOTLIGHT May 23). It is true that Hillary is today what he is because of Mount Everest
and Nepal. And he has not forgotten it. Through his trusts, he has helped the community of
people living in remote mountain regions. It is, therefore, proper that Nepalese
government has decided to confer him with honorary citizenship. Better late than never. Krishna Gurung Deserving Personality In the interview with Father James J.
Donnelly (SPOTLIGHT, May 16), he has said that he was refused Nepalese citizenship. Though
he has said he has no complaints whatsoever regarding this, I feel that Nepal should not
hesitate in giving citizenship to people like Donnelly. A person who has spent four
decades in Nepal serving the education sector of this country deserves no less. It is a
pity that authorities could not see this reality. Anyway, Nepalese will always love
Donnelly for his untiring service to the country and countrymen no matter whether he gets
the citizenship or not. Janak Sharma Costs of Confrontation The article "Counting The Cost"
(SPOTLIGHT May 16) quite correctly summarized the political situation in the country. If
the political parties and the monarchy continue to move towards the path of confrontation,
the nation will be the ultimate loser. Democracy and monarchy are two pillars of Nepalese
nationhood. There is no way one can be compromised for the sake of other. When this fact
is crystal clear, why there is confrontation is a big surprise? Nabin Bikram Basnet |
