Fables Of Life

Storywriter Lava Gaunle narrates various vicissitudes of human life through short stories

By A CORRESSPONDENT

Although Gaunle is a new comer in Nepalese literature, he has already captured his place in story writing. One of the basic characteristics of his stories is that he is efficient in grasping the real situations and put it to writing.

In his latest Kyanam Disturb, Gaunle has made efforts to portray social malaise of contemporary society. He compares the living styles and the aspiration of young and talks about the misuse of the term modernization. “Lavaji is bold and frank and he does not hesitate to say what he sees,” said Dr. Bimal Prasad Koirala, a litterateur himself. “In his stories, one can see changing behavior of youths.”

In his 24 stories, Gaunle has described various phases of social life. The rural situations as well as the difficulties faced by rural population are vividly portrayed. Although it is difficult to portray the rural surrounding in words, Gaunle has been quite able to do so.

His presentation is dramatic as well as based on social reality. Being a youth himself, Gaunle understands the challenges and aspirations of young population well. It is very difficult to describe social upheavals, frustrations and behaviors of rebellious youths but Gaunle seems capable to do so.

From the rebellious youth to inner sexual feeling of lads and lashes, Gaunle expresses his opinion through soft and sweet Nepalese words. Although some of his stories try to analyze the sex-psychology, he avoids the vulgarization of the topics. In most of the contemporary modern Nepali literatures, the writers often ignore this practice.

In his first story Achanak (‘Suddenly’), Gaunle narrates a story of meeting with a girl. Gaunle peeps into the girl’s mind as well as her outer appearances describing her dress and other physical attributes. It gives the real impression about the interaction between a young girl and a boy. It is one of the beautiful pieces of stories written by Gaunle.

“Although Gaunle is a man of serious nature, he is a man of full romance in his eyes,” writes Dr. Koirala in his foreword.

Whether in describing the rural setting or portraying urban life of Kathmandu, Gaunle’s eye captures all aspects including the lifestyles. Although he generally picks up serious themes, this time he has concentrated on the romance and love stories as well. Since Gaunle is a young writer, he has encountered several problems and challenges.

He employs his keen sense of observation in his stories describing the actors very clearly. He also deals a lot about the social practices and tendencies through his fables. From outrageously romantic settings to purely social ones, he appears adept at dealing with different kinds of situation.

Gaunle is young but he has shown his potential in Nepalese literature particularly in the field of short stories. Stories compiled in his recently published book shows that Gaunle is gradually establishing himself as a storywriter to reckon with.

Nirmal Kumar Rimal expresses his inner feelings through poems

By A CORRESSPONDENT

Poet Rimal is a freelance writer who has already written a number of poems and short stories depicting love in all its dimensions and depths, spanning individual communities and human beings.

Post-graduate student of the Tribhuwan University, Rimal’s poems are short and sweet. Translated from Nepali, Rimal’s poems describe pain and joy as well as the expression of nature.

‘These poems present the spectrum of Rimal’s times, as well as ours. He expresses various moods in them that were often induced by the condition of his times. The mood of despondency as expressed (by him) is not something that comes out of the poet languishing in the non-descript corners of times. Instead, they come from the consciousness of the times that we all have lived with Rimal,” Dr. Abhi Subedi, a prominent litterateur.

“Rimal sees pain and joy as inextricably related impulses. The composite picture of these different pulls of emotions is the poetry about the self. His poetry reflects the somewhat romantic slant of the mood of his times. Some project the sense that old Persian form of poetry named Ghazal do project,” said Subedi.

“These poems are recollections of stray sensibility and sporadic susceptibility and are, therefore, not grooved along a definite style and seam. I leave to the readers to censure, ignore or applaud them,” said poet Nirmal Kumar Rimal.

Rimal’s use of the persona is a remarkable feature of his poetry. The “I” is the construct as well as a metaphor of the poet’s own anguish, his experience of living through difficult and diffused modes of times in this land over the last three decades or so. Rimal has very remarkably captured these feelings, adds Subedi.

In his 43 poems, Rimal describes nature, life and social surroundings. Most of the poems are based on his own experiences.
