Contemporary Politics Josses new book
highlights different aspects of contemporary Nepalese politics By A CORRESPONDENT Nepal has seen much political and diplomatic turmoil in the last one year. In the regional and international level the situation remained fluid and unpredictable and so many things changed in a matter of few years. Since many incidents were part of the history, some of them have already been forgotten. Being a journalist, Manaranjan Josse keenly observes the situation and has written a number of articles analyzing such events. But his articles were published in various pieces in different newspapers. In an effort to show what happened in the last one year and how he has observed the circumstances, Josse comes out with a new book- a compilation of his articles and research papers. From internal political changes to regional political and international relations, Josses articles cover different spheres. Josse discussed the Indias policy towards Maoists and King Birendras Proposal of Zone of Peace and aftermath of the Royal step of 4 October 2002. This book represents an attempt to provide the reader with an insight into key political happenings, and opportunity to savor the public temper in Nepal over an eventual, fluid and chaotic eight-month period between September 2002 and April 2003, said Josse in his preface. The volume is, in effect, a compilation of 31 write-ups that appeared in Space Time Today, Kathmandu, in my weekly column nettled, All Things Considered. The book also contains a paper that Josse presented on August 6,2003 at a two-day regional seminar in Kathmandu on Security and Cooperation in South Asia, sponsored by Spotlight News Magazine. There are many senior journalists but only a few of them are active. Manranjan Josse, former chief editor of the countrys oldest English newspaper the Rising Nepal, continues to contribute number of articles to many newspapers. There are only a few senior journalists in Nepal as active as Josse who has written thousands of articles on Nepalese contemporary politics as well as regional and international affairs. Bold and studious, Josse, who worked as a chief editor of the Rising Nepal for quite a long time before moving to the United Nations as Nepals deputy permanent representative. Josse, presently consultant editor at the Peoples Review Weekly, is also regular contributor to other Nepalese journals. Josse is well known for his nationalistic stand writing sharp and clear views on international and regional affairs.
Widely read scholar, Josse always cites different journals, books and local newspapers to analyze the incidents. Josses articles always give insight and in depth ideas about particular events. Whether in case of Nepals quest for security or the internal politics of Nepali Congress, RPP and UML, Josse has cited all sides before drawing up any particularly conclusion. At a time when most of the intellectuals and journalists are sided with one or other ideology, Josse tries to describe the event maintaining objectivity and impartiality. As usual Josses new book will help to analyze different events that occurred in Nepal during that period. By going through the book, one can observe how Nepalese society has gone through various difficult political phases. Gotterdammerung, The Twilight of
