TRADE FAIR

Boosting Trade

Tibetan Autonomous Region (TAR) is hosting a major trade fair in capital paving the way to boost the trade with Nepal

By A CORRESSONDENT

Nepal and Tibetan Autonomous Region   (TAR) of China has a long history of bilateral trade relations. The trade remained in favor of Nepal till 1970. With the modernization and industrialization of TAR, the situation has changed now and the trade is in favor of TAR.

With an aim to increase the bilateral trade contact between the two countries, Trade Promotion Center is organizing a major trade fair in Kathmandu showing opportunities available in the TAR.

Being the only country in the region with direct high-way link with the TAR, Nepal is yet to reap benefit from its development and prosperity. Despite enormous potential for exports of vegetables and other products, Nepal is yet to make effort to benefit from them.

As Lhasa and other cities in TAR are gradually transforming, the demand for seasonal and other fresh vegetables and fruits is rapidly growing. Nepal can produce such products in nearby areas.

"This is going to be a big trade fair to show the business opportunities with TAR," said a senior official at the Trade Promotion Center. " Nepalese business groups and business groups from the TAR will learn each other's potentials and challenges."

Since Nepal has many low lands and shortest route to Lhasa, the country still can reap benefit by exporting fresh seasonal vegetables and other seasonal fruits.  The trade fair is going to be organized at a time when Nepal's trade deficit with TAR is increasing by many volumes.

Inaugurated on October 14, one week long trade fair will help Nepal to understand the development taking place in TAR. The fair was originally scheduled to be organized in September but had to be postponed due to political agitation and breakdown of ceasefire.

Since TAR is opening up for tourism, Tibetan officials are looking at the Nepal's expertise in the trekking, rafting, hotel management and other sectors. As the violence in Nepal has discouraged many trekking groups eager to go for rafting and trekking in high altitude areas, Tibet has become an alternative  ideal choice for such adventure tourism. Nepalese entrepreneurs can also benefit by offering their expertise to Tibet.

"Nepalese entrepreneurs can help TAR to develop their tourism industry," said a tourism entrepreneur. Nepal has world-renowned expertise in trekking, expeditions and rafting.
