UNIFIED
SECURITY |
Tightening The Screw The government proposes to
strengthen unified command to quell the Maoist insurgency By A CORRESSPONDENT As the government is preparing to hold
elections for the House of Representatives and local bodies, restoring normalcy in the
country seems to be its top priority. To forge better coordination and to make
security arrangements more effective, the government organized a three day high-level
meeting of senior officials of Royal Nepalese Army, Armed Police, Nepal Police and
Regional Chief Administrators. The government will mobilize Royal
Nepalese Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police and local administration in a unified manner to
provide security and development, said Prime Minister Surya Bahadur Thapa.
Maoists are trying to terrorize people in Terai now, after they faced defeat in
hilly region. So, the security must be upgraded in Terai to nullify their influence.
Following the breakdown of ceasefire in
August 27, the security forces have made some important progresses in defeating the
Maoists. Although Maoists are concentrating their efforts to terrorize urban population by
undertaking individual killings, they were defeated in major assaults in two different
areas in mid-western region. Armed Police Force, which used to be inferior till a year
ago, is now coming as a strong fighting force against the Maoists. Encouraged by the success of Armed Police
Force in insurgency, unified command will take the charge. The government will soon
post security personnel under the unified command in different entry points and highway
links, said prime minister Thapa. Chief of the Royal Nepalese Army General
Pyar Jung Thapa also believes that the unified operation is more effective in containing
the Maoist insurgency. There needs to be more coordination among security forces to
achieve success in the war against terrorism, said Army Chief Thapa. He added
that due to series of defeats and growing international opinion against them, the Maoists
are in a low morale and, as a result, there are possibilities that they would try to
spread terror in the coming days. |
