Speak Up

The cover story “Spring of Discord” (SPOTLIGHT April 9) clearly pointed how and why the prevailing differences in Nepalese society exist. Obviously, there must be some force that is engaged in persistent efforts to widen the differences among constitutional forces. Otherwise, there is no logical reason to justify the current level of animosity among these forces. But the problem is that none of the leaders have ever pointed to this outside force much less taken initiatives to halt its steps. From left to right and top to bottom, everybody should realize that they must speak out in order to save their nation.

Do Not Abuse the Juvenile Force

Your cover story “Politics: Broaden Democratic Alliances”(SPOTLIGHT April 9) addressed the current imbroglio very clearly. The triangular forces prevalent in the nation now are acting with centrifugal force to go further apart, while they should have been acting in centripetal forces to come together. The contribution of the group of unemployed youth cannot be overlooked to make the agitation large as well as violent. Thus, the neo-five party alliance need not take pride in the largeness of the mob. And what the government should understand clearly is that such a force of unemployed youth can “set the nation on fire” if not addressed properly. The government, the parties as well as the Maoists should let the economic activities run smoothly and stop using or rather abusing the youth to break down railings and vandalize public properties so that it will not be a Herculean task for them to re-build the infrastructure and restructure the economy when they come to power.

Another Push Back

This is in response to your article “Tourist Arrival: Growth in Neighborhood” (SPOTLIGHT April 9). Not only to us- the trekking guides and other tourism professionals - it was encouraging to everyone here that the tourist arrival had surged in the recent months.  The economic sector - particularly tourism related - was beginning to breath a sigh of relief when again the Maoists called the three day bandh and the news of the street violence spread all over the world. As a result tourists have started to cancel their bookings and the rate of new bookings has also reduced considerably. It is an irony that in this ill-fated country whenever something good starts happening there is always an equal or larger opposite force to nullify its effect.

Good Bye H.E. Malinowski

I appreciate the views expressed by Michael Malinowski “All Legal Force Need To Cooperate To Address The Number One Problem That Is Maoist Insurgency ” (SPOTLIGHT April 9) regarding the Maoist insurgency in Nepal. I think the root cause of insurgency, as he addressed, is the ignorance and confinement the people went through for a long period of time until before half a century. The only way to contain the problem is to try and solve those problems such as lack of education, unemployment and social evolution, not the military operation.
