EDITORIAL

Very few men around the world are gifted with the faculty of clairvoyance. Any politician who is fortunate enough to be endowed with this precious quality can render invaluable services to his country. Nepal seems to be the exceptional country where a great number of politicians claim to possess this rare gem. Even if one were to accept it there can be no denying that this country has not benefited at all as these very politicians have become responsible for all the ills the poor country is suffering from. It is, indeed, a great pity that all the politicians who have come to the forefront to rule the country for the last fifteen years have only contributed to worsen the situation and now we are confronting the most desperate state of affairs which could spell total disaster for the country and the people if we delay or fail to take revolutionary steps expeditiously.

It was a great stroke of luck, although tragic, that brought King Gyanendra to the center stage of Nepali politics. And the Nepali politicians provided him with the opportunities to repair the damages. In the last few years since King Gyanendra has assumed the responsibility of ruling the country, the Nepali politicians have not only exposed themselves of their self-oriented unscrupulous character that they have totally forfeited their claim of ruling the country as the representatives of the people. Investing them again with the charter to direct the course of events in the most fragile circumstances would only prove to be a big disservice to the country. No ghost need come from hell to advise us that the time is more than ripe these shady politicians were sidelined. Procrastination to do the right thing at the right time is sure to lead us to great peril. We just cannot afford to fail to learn from experience. No consideration or pressure, howsoever strong and tempting, must influence our judgment. Nothing must desist us from performing our duty to the country. Since we have seen the working of democracy in our neighborhood and even much further away, how it can be twisted and turned to suit the exigencies of the power that be, we cannot overlook the fact that no strong and wise man would give in to the guiles of imposters. Since we have to bear the brunt, we and only we can and have to defend our interest, that of our people and that of our country as a whole. We have always exhorted King Gyanendra to rise up to the occasion and save the country from the clutches of these selfish and corrupt politicians who have betrayed it again and again. Their callousness and insensitivity has cost the country dearly and everyday some poor Nepalis are losing their precious lives unnecessarily. Unlike the politicians King Gyanendra must be grieving tremendously at the loss of every Nepali life. This senseless killing has to stop at the earliest and it has been established that these politicians are incapable of doing it. Consequently, King Gyanendra has to act and act quickly. It is time now for him to realize whom to trust. We do also believe that the experiences of the past few years must have provided him with the acumen of knowing and choosing his good friends. Now time is calling him to perform what has been ordained. History is waiting to judge him.
