Spend Less On Ammunitions

The story about the budget of the coming fiscal year was very informative “BUDGET 2004: Race Against Time (SPOTLIGHT July 2)”. In addition to the information provided in your magazine, recent newspaper reports state that the security forces are asking for three billion rupees more budget in the coming fiscal year. If the asked amount is given, their expenditure will equal to more than one-fifth of the revenue. It is very ironic that one-fifth of the income of the country will be spent for fuelling the rebellion inside the country. I suppose such a trend of increasing security budget every year is not going to end the problem. Instead it will add more problems. So, it is better to invest on finding out the root cause of the rebellion and to overcome it by social, economic and cultural/educational reforms.

Who Will Take The Responsibility?

With no finance minister appointed for the preparation of the budget for this year, it is very unclear about who will take the responsibility of this year’s budget (“BUDGET 2004: Race Against Time” SPOTLIGHT July 2). Even the upcoming minister will not be an elected one, which will not make him/her fully accountable to the people. People expect announcements of new programs and policies about finances in the budget. However, in a situation like this, we people are very confused about what to expect and what not to expect from the budget of this year. Because of these things people can never plan out their finances properly thanks to the never-ending political instability of the country.

Too Many Cooks Spoil The Broth

The talks about constituent assembly is very common nowadays “CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY: Media Debate (SPOTLIGHT July 2)”. I am not so much of an intellectual to know about the rights or wrongs of such process. But, what I constantly wonder is how is the statute formulated by 205 different brains going to reach consensus. While the constitution drafted by few persons is in effect unhindered in India since the last more than 50 years. But the constitution drafted by nine people has not been able to gather full consensus at present in Nepal. In this situation, would not be too naïve to expect a consensus constitution from the constituent assembly.

Peace Talks, A Must

The peace talks is the only way to drive the country out of the present turmoil “PEACE TALKS: Heightened Prospects (SPOTLIGHT July 2)”. The nation is turning into a failed state and the people are suffering in terms of law and order, personal freedom and economic state. Day by day the country’s situation is becoming worse. Looking at the global trend and the revolution in information communication sector, it is quite unlikely that Maoists can capture the central government and rule the country peacefully. Likewise, looking at the social injustice, economic disparity and educational backwardness prevalent in the society, it is unlikely that revolution of Maoists can be quelled by using forces only. It is but going to give birth to more Maoists only. So, the only way to get out of this odd situation is to meet at the intersection.  Both, the Maoists and the government should be aware of the futility of their present actions and beware of its worse consequences. So, they should immediately go for peace talks to save themselves, if not to save their fellow citizens.

Cellular Pollution

The late poet Bhupi Sherchan has very rightly expressed in his poem that “this land is full of gossip”. People are illiterate, unemployed and inflation is very high in this country.

There is no restriction for the children to watch any kind of movies, TV programs and websites. And now comes the mobile mania. Is the government of this country aware of the health hazards caused by the regular use of mobile phone? Or, are the government officials and businessmen only interested to collect the money and make profit.

Why is the government trying to jeopardize the health of innocent people? We have already faced enough pollution and other related problems due to the government’s improper policies. Now, let us all join hands and make the polluters pay and save our kids and this country from more pollution.

Looking Forward

I am an admiring listener of Situ Kharel’s songs “MUSIC: Touching Tone (SPOTLIGHT July 2)”. I am very happy to know that she is bringing out her third album. The best thing I like about her songs is that they are of sentimental kind and that she is singing for a noble cause. I wish her all the best for her third album and eagerly look forward to her third album.
