PHOTO EXHIBITION
Education in Nepal

A young photo-journalist organizes a photo exhibition on “Education in Nepal” in the British capital

By A CORRESPONDENT

A photo exhibition on the Nepalese education by a young British freelancer and photo-journalist concluded in London this week. Entitled “Developing in a Developing World: Education in Nepal,” the four-day exhibition (July 8-11) of photos and words brought together colour photographs taken by Matt Daw during his trips to Nepal over the last three years and creations by young Nepali students.

The photographs taken by Matt show children who have been victimised by the Maoist insurgency, dilapidated schools and their poor educational environment. He focuses his lens upon children studying at Hindu Vidyapeeth Nepal in Ghorahi in the insurgency-affected Dang district. He then focuses on the founder and students of Samata Sikshya Niketan at Boudha, Kathmandu. He also displayed letters, essays and drawings by students from Hindu Vidyapeeth Nepal, Balkumari, Lalitpur when he was a volunteer teacher there.

“This is an excellent exhibition. It really represents at optimistic level the state of education in Nepal and what the future of Nepalese education would be,” said Emma Haight, a visitor at The Art Academy at Southwark, London where the exhibition took place.

Matt said that he had decided to organise the exhibition at his own expense with a view to raise awareness on the state of education in Nepal among British people and media. He said he hoped that the exhibition would be able to raise some funds which he intended to distribute among the HVP, SSN and Community Action Nepal—a charity set up by Doug Scott, a noted British mountaineer.

A graduate in English literature from the Oxford University, Matt first visited Nepal in 2001 and taught English at HVP, Balkumari for four months. “There is no regular scholarship available for Nepali children who are really in need. This is my small initiative to help them,” he added.
