Ignored Everywhere

I would like to convey my expression of thanks to your magazine for raising an issue, which people had not thought of seriously (“A Left Out Generation” SPOTLIGHT June 11). As you have mentioned, a large chunk of the country’s population comprise of young generation, who have not been cared for by any institution. They have received neither good education nor useful skills to earn a decent livelihood. It is an irony that in the twenty first century so many people have nothing worthwhile to earn livelihood.

Height of Disparity

Apropos your cover story, I would like to express my opinion about the widening disparity the country is going through (“A Left Out Generation” SPOTLIGHT June 11). While a small proportion of privileged youths in the cities enjoy a sophisticated life, the state of the majority of the youths of the country is miserable. And, in fact, it is this left out generation that is going to take care of the country in the future. It is quite certain that the privileged class of youths, who are enjoying government subsidized privileges directly or indirectly are not going to stay in this country at difficult times. At other times, even if they do stay here they do not care about the motherland. It seems they are trained only to see what the country has given to them and not to see what they can give to the nation sharply in contrast to the famous saying, “don’t think what your nation has given to you, think what you can give to the nation.” by John F. Kennedy.

Special Appeal

Firstly, on behalf of Friends of Britain and Nepal, we would like to congratulate Sher Bahadur Deuba as the new prime minister of Nepal. At the same time, we would also like to make this special appeal to the new government, all political parties including revolutionary Maoist party headed by Prachanda and Dr Babu Ram Bhattarai.

Nepal, which was, only a few years ago, known to the world as one of the most peaceful and beautiful countries, has today turned into one of the most insecure and instable nations. This, we believe, is due to negligence and incompetence of the ruling leaders and their subordinates. They have always kept their personal interests first, rather than giving priority to the welfare of the people and the nation. Even now, they are struggling to bring back the people’s sovereignty but they have not fully understood the innocent hearts and minds of nearly 25 million Nepalese people. The latest political developments in the country clearly shows that our leaders are more interested for political gains than saving the nation from sinking deeper into despair. Every single day several innocent lives are being killed by bombs and bullets in a country where people did not even know what the word bomb meant. Hundreds of schools have been closed and thousands of students abducted to fight against their own country. Thousands worth of infrastructure developments have been destroyed including those concerned with basic needs of everyday life like health posts, schools and community offices, some of  which are funded by donor agencies. The new and the existing local and national developments programs have almost come to standstill. Hundreds of young and educated Nepalese are leaving the country in search of work and better life in foreign lands. Thousands of young women have been widowed and tens of thousands of children have been orphaned. Significant amount of development budgets have been spent to strengthen the army. More than half a million tourists visited Nepal 5 years ago, but today we are struggling to attract few thousands. Few people, who made the effort to invest in the country, are struggling to keep their companies functioning, profit is far away. Thus, the time has come for everyone, His Majesty the King Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev, leaders of the political parties and the civil society to realize the fact and act according to the need of the hour. Before it is too late, we would like to request to resolve the matter through dialogues and negotiations and give first priority for the development and prosperity of the nation and its people. Let us not make another mistake and risk the lives of 25 million people and Nepal as a whole pushing it to more trouble and uncertainty.
