EDITORIAL

The recent terrorist attack on the train that killed hundreds in Spain has accentuated the imperativeness of global cooperation to root out terrorism from the face of the world. Even though we may not succeed to totally eradicate the scourge for all time and from all the places, that it is the highest priority for all the peace loving nations to come together to fight this evil cannot be denied. And Nepal, indeed, is no exception. That the Maoist insurgency in Nepal has been generated by the corrupt governments that ruled the country after the restoration of democracy in 1990 has been well established beyond any controversy. And that the Maoists have fully exploited the open border arrangement between Nepal and India and India’s giving blind eye to the Maoists’ activities inside the Indian territory have greatly hampered Nepal’s endeavor to restore peace and normalcy in the country too, have been irrefutably recognized. And Nepal’s traditional friends and well-wishers like China, the U.K. and the U.S.A. also must not have missed India’s sinister policy towards Nepal. But, now India, too, must have realized her folly that it will never pay to patronize a terrorist, because it does not take time for a terrorist to turn into a “Bhashmasur”. Nepal not only desires intimate and friendly relations with India, but it is her necessity, her destiny. India should not try to exploit that situation. As such, India has to sincerely join hands with Nepal to crush the Maoist insurgency at the earliest possible time. Destabilizing political situation in Nepal can never be in India’s interest. If our good Indian friends are harboring any utopian dream, it is time they forsake it. Because there are millions of patriotic Nepalis to foil the impious collaboration of a handful of quislings. Moreover, the institution of monarchy in Nepal is the strongest uniting force. Try howsoever hard a few anti-nationals might to poison the thinking of poor Nepali people against the King, the various felicitations to the King have conclusively demonstrated that monarchy is still strongly entrenched and the King is the most popular national leader. What he needs is a few wise advisers who can rise above self and pelf. King Gyanendra has been ordained to guide the nation. When the popularly elected governments utterly failed to fulfill their obligations, the King could not stay a silent spectator to see the country going to the dogs. Since end justifies the means and more so in the case of poor and handicapped countries like ours, King Gyanendra need not hesitate to take any measures in the interest of the people and the country. Like an elephant that takes no notice of the barking dogs, King Gyanendra must have a resolute mind to save the country from disaster. As long peace and normalcy are not restored, all developmental projects obstructed by the Maoist anti-social activities cannot be restarted and the country’s economic development will be stalled. What King Gyanendra urgently needs at the moment is a clean, honest and effective government. The incumbent prime minister and his cabinet has not only started to stink of corruption and nepotism but even failed to cater to the primary needs of the people. The country is almost paralyzed by blockades created by the Maoists but the government is misleading the people by giving false information. As such, this government must be replaced immediately if the uncertain situation in the country is to be controlled. King Gyanendra need have no hesitation to appoint a new government. Those who shout about the violation of constitutional norms should start making self-appraisals. After all, constitutions are made for the smooth functioning of the state. Any constitution not meeting the requirements of the people can be altered or even scrapped. We do trust our humble but sincere advice gets home.
