Immediately on the
footsteps of the massacre in Bhojpur in eastern Nepal, the carnage that took place in Beni
in western Nepal less than a week back has rent the hearts of every peace loving Nepali.
Indeed, it was the encounter between the insurgents and the security forces. But we cannot
ignore, try howsoever hard we might, that the killers and the killed were both Nepalis.
And who would not be pained to witness the brutal and demonic destruction of precious
human lives who could be our close kith and kin. And the pain increases hundred fold when
those that are deprived of their right to live in the mayhem are boys and girls in their
teens misled and misdirected by selfish persons fighting for objectives that could be
achieved through peace and lawful means if they are just and rational. If on the one hand
those who are mainly responsible for generating such a gruesome situation are permitted to
shamelessly enjoy the fruits of their savage loot, on the other hand, those that are
espousing the cause of this brutal murders are lolling in some safe foreign haven and
reveling in the munificence of their benefactors, completely oblivious of the dangerous
consequences that are sure to follow if they would ever prevail. It is, indeed, very
distressing to see everybody treating the Maoist problem as a political issue. It is not.
It is out and out economic issue and must be tackled totally in a different way, which
demands men with vision and imagination, men of integrity and character and men of
unimpeachable honesty, dedication and patriotism at the helms of affairs and not a bunch
of men who are stinking with their obnoxious past. Why should King Gyanendra persist with
this bunch despite the almost unanimous abhorrence of the people is, indeed, beyond all
comprehension. King Gyanendra has a very difficult job to do. And, at this particular
juncture when the country is facing the gravest dangers, he cannot afford to be
vacillating. And he has no time to procrastinate. And the exigencies of the situation
demand quick delivery without paying any heed to the senseless criticisms of the corrupt
and unscrupulous politicians. These anti-nationals must not be shown any mercy. Anybody
who can go on exacerbating the already volatile situation in the pursuit of his vile
interest must be dealt with accordingly. The overwhelming people have manifested their
total disenchantment with the present political leadership and are exhorting the King to
punish them for their crimes against the nation. They want him to redress their miseries
by restoring peace and normalcy in the country. They are fed up with governments that
cannot exercise any authority in the kingdom and are putting them to all kinds of
hardships not even being able to defend their fundamental rights of freely enjoying their
own property. What is the purpose of a government that have proved beyond a ray of doubt,
to be most ineffective and inefficient. Since the people of Nepal have demonstrated
overwhelmingly on more than one occasion that the King is their only hope who can take the
country out of the woods from the crossroads of deaths and destructions. King Gyanendra
does not need any more manifestation or proof of the loyalty, devotion and expectations of
his people. Rather the people of Bhojpur and Beni would derive a big solace if they could
have Darshan of their King, after the grim tragic incidents. This is a time when King
Gyanendra urgently needs unloaded advice. Indeed, his commitment to democracy and
constitutional monarchy is well appreciated by his people and friends. But they also do
realize peace and normalcy are the sine qua non for democracy to give good governance.
Consequently, King Gyanendra has no option but to use all the means at his disposal to
restore peace and normalcy at the earliest possible time. And this is not possible as long
he does not find men who can deliver. So, the top priority for him is to find men who can
perform. The people of Nepal do still believe King Gyanendra can do it. We do trust he
will not fail them. |
