Very Informative I would like to
thank you very much for the informative cover story about the power sector Energy:
Whither Power Sector(SPOTLIGHT May 14). It is an irony that while Nepal is
considered the second richest country in the world in hydropower, it has harnessed much
below its potential supplying only 22 percent of the population with electricity. Even the
ones who have facility of electricity have to pay relatively high price for it. In the
long run, hydroelectricity is the best fuel. It has many advantages over other kinds of
energies. Firstly, it is inexhaustible. The other kinds of fuels like petroleum products
are exhaustible and it is said that the exhaustion of the fossil fuels is not far away
from now. Secondly, it does not pollute like the organic fossil fuels. And third, to
Nepal, it is home product. We can use our resources, our land and our capital to construct
hydroelectricity plants. In fact, the price of electricity can also be much cheaper with
the increased production by involving local resources. A lot of foreign currency used for
the purchase of petroleum products can thus be saved. Rabina
Satyal Power Of Water Nepal must redefine
its water resource programs to achieve the huge potentials it has (Whither Power
Sector SPOTLIGHT May 14). The cover story amply demonstrated how Nepal should move
ahead in future. Despite voices to the contrary, Nepal must also take initiatives to
export power to India and earn money. A concerted efforts from the government is needed to
convince the Indian side about the mutual benefit in harnessing hydropower. Bishnu Bista Clean Image The story on the
outgoing prime minister Surya Bahadur Thapa Smooth Exit (SPOTLIGHT May 14)
gave a lot of information about the history of Surya Bahadur Thapa as prime minister. The
fact that he was impeached and jailed for six months during the Panchayat regime compelled
me to turn my dictionary for the meaning of the phrase clean image. I
wonder what the meaning of clean image could be. Is a man who has been
impeached by a body of representatives from the people still be of clean image? I am
surprised that the longest serving prime minister of the country is still holding a clean
image after being jailed and impeached. Saurav
Basnet Donors Dilemma In response to Bipin
Adhikaris article Donors on Human Rights and Restoration of Democracy
(SPOTLIGHT May 14), I would like to put my opinion about the donors voice regarding
the Maoists. As seen through official specs the Maoists are not a recognized political
force as the government has banned it and declared it as terrorists. So, in an official
meet talking about a banned organization labeled as terrorist is not appropriate. The
donors, I think, have obviously condemned the human rights violation by the Maoists. But,
as those are criminal activities to be curtailed by the governments security
mechanism. Andrew Mann O &A Level Curriculum In Nepal First of all the
state must introduce the adequate education system that suits the geographical background
of our country Nepal so that the students can be fully aware of the knowledge of Nepal and
its history. But the education system here is running the other way round by embracing
systems like "O" and "A" level; and other foreign curriculum studies.
That is why everything is running out of control like brain drains etc. On the 9th of May,
I watched a local Kings colleges "O" and "A" level program shown
in a local television channel in the evening. I was surprised to see the
students with no school uniforms. When the parents are paying the school fees that
are so high, the students are still trying to find their 'status in the schools.
What future lies ahead for these young and innocent kids of our country is anybodys
guess. Yam Gurung Give Wider Coverage To Sports It was good to see a
coverage of sports Festival of Football(SPOTLIGHT May 14) after a long time in
your magazine. While political, social and economic issues are more pressing in society,
the role of entertainment cannot be ruled out for a healthy society. Sports is one of the
issues that helps keep everyone physically as well as mentally fit. In a popular magazine
like yours, the coverage of sports is not sufficient to attract the younger generation
readership like us. So, please include more news and analysis about sports in future. And,
if possible please include other entertainment issues like music, movies and so on. Ashis,
