Sound Of Music

By THAKUR AMGAI

The Austrian-born flute player Karin Leither teamed up with a renowned guitarist Jorgo Panetos Friday evening (May 14) in a melodious musical concert at Hotel Yak and Yeti. In the program organized by the Active Women of Nepal (AWON), the duo played about a dozen instrumental numbers like “Vienese Dances”, “Duet e-minor”, “Menuett” and “Alla Turca” to name a few. Domeniconi’s “suite op. 19 for guitar solo” among others derived huge applause from the audience.

In a typical classroom ambience, more than 50 students who attended the program at the invitation from AWON enjoyed the “The Sound of Music”. Unlike most of the other programs that are targeted at the adult audience, this concert was particularly organized for the children. The artistes also joined the children in a photo-session.

The musician-duo have performed at various places as soloist and in groups. Karin has performed in Vienna Chamber Orchestra, Vienna Mozart and Austrian Mozart, among others; and Jorgos has performed as a soloist in Vienna Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra Municipal of Caracas and the Philharmonic Orchestra Kielce, among others.  He has performed in concerts held in more than 15 countries including Austria, Germany, Italy, France, Thailand and the USA.

Born in 1972, Karin did her initial schooling in music at the Academy of Music and later received her final diploma with Prof. Wolfgang Schulz. She has won competitions like Jugend Musiziert, Musica Juventitus Forum Junger Kuenstler, Telentioium and Live Music Now. Among other music-related works, she is currently a tutor at the Sandor Vegh Symposium for Woodwinds in Austria.

Athens-born Guitarist Panetsos studied classical guitar at the National Conservatory of Athens with Andres Paleologos. Later on, he also took part in several master classes. He has been teaching for five years in the Department of Musical Psychology at the University of Vienna.

AWON has been organizing various social activities aimed at helping children and women in the country.
