Practice Fair Play

As B. R. Ambedkar, the drafter of the Indian Constitution has said, the constitution in itself is not good or bad, but it is the people who work on it that are good or bad "CONSTITUTION: Under All Out Assault (SPOTLIGHT November 5)." In the recent days, there has been much speculations about the inadequacy or the flaws of the existing Nepali Constitution. It is the same constitution, which was much applauded during early nineties when it was just launched. It was even termed as one of the best constitutions of the world. The situation now needs no description. It is not the constitution that has pushed the country to this crisis, but the people who were responsible to implement it. Nor is the constitution responsible for the solution of the present crisis. It is, after all, a piece of paper, inked by some think tanks. It is in fact the people who operate it who are responsible for the present crisis of the country.

Change Attitude, Not Constitution

There is a saying in Nepali which goes "kuro ra kulo jata lage pani janchha" (words and canal can be diverted to any direction) "CONSTITUTION: Under All Out Assault (SPOTLIGHT November 5)." That means words can be interpreted in any way. All the laws and rules and even the constitution have been interpreted to suit the interest of the people in power many times in the history. The success of the statute depends on the honesty of the people in power. There has been a lot of discussions about changing the constitution in the recent days. What these people should be clear about is that there is no use changing the constitution unless the people change themselves. Likewise, if people change their attitude, the present constitution can give solution to any problem.

Gloomy Projection

The special report on the use of torture was very informative "USE OF TORTURE: A Terrible Situation (SPOTLIGHT November 5)." Given the news and the gossips in day-to-day life, it is not very surprising that people have been going through such a terrible situation. However, reflecting on the situation gives a very gloomy picture of the country's present and future. Not only those who are tortured even others who are very sensitive about such issues are also prone to mental illness. In fact, doctors have informally told in many instances that the number of patients suffering from depression and anxiety has increased by a large margin in the recent years. This increment in the mental patients is undoubtedly because of the dismal human rights situation and other crises the country is going through. For us Nepalese, who are not habituated to such odd situations, it is being very difficult to cope with such situations. It is a fact that what cannot be cured must be endured. But the cases of torture are not something that cannot be cured. We should all pressurize the concerned agencies to reduce the torture to bring up a healthy society.

Stop Torture

Thank you for raising the issue of concern in the special report about torture "USE OF TORTURE: A Terrible Situation (SPOTLIGHT November 5)." It is high time that the government becomes serious to stop torturing its citizens arrested for various reasons. The government, being a guardian of all its citizens, is supposed to protect them. We cannot expect and tolerate such activities that harm the citizens instead of protecting them. Even if anyone is arrested for some criminal or terrorist activities as they claim, their fist duty is to protect them. The idea of arresting them is to improve them and try to reduce activities detrimental to the welfare of the society and the nation. By, torturing the goal cannot be achieved. Instead, the people will suffer mentally and also develop an antipathy to the government, which will in turn make them more hostile to the society. So, the government should think of the long-term impacts of torture and devise other strategies that are helpful to improve the situation of the arrested people than spoil them.

Be Civilized

Torture is in no way acceptable in a civilized society of the twenty-first century "USE OF TORTURE: A Terrible Situation (SPOTLIGHT November 5)." On one side we claim ourselves to be more educated and civilized than our ancestors. Contrary to this claim we resort to inhumane activities like torture to suppress people who don't agree with us. We should stop such animal activities immediately if we really are educated and civilized.

Media Responsible

The situation of tourism is hopeless not just in Chitwan but in the entire nation because of the present conflict situation "TOURISM CHITWAN: On The Road To Nowhere (SPOTLIGHT November 5)". We cannot just blame the conflict for the situation. In the modern world, almost every place is suffering from some kind of conflict. We cannot escape from the conflict and find an isolated place at such time. So, we should make some strategy to boost the tourism industry, despite the internal conflict. And it is possible because people across the globe ought to be convinced by now that they are not safe even inside their own homes in a way - on a flip side every place is safe.
