OFF THE RECORD

Double Speak - UML Style

Nepal : Double speak

Known for their double speaks, CPN-UML leaders do not mind speaking through their hats. From general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal to other leaders, they change their stand frequently and confuse the people. Recently, some powerful CPN-UML leaders including K.P. Sharma Oli demanded the resignation of ministers representing the party - because they agreed to renew an ordinance. For a couple of days, CPN-UML's ministers avoided to make any comment on the issue. When the party pressed for the clarification, UML's ministers blamed it all on the prime minister Sher Bahadur Deuba. Although CPN-UML is a part of a coalition government, the comment of CPN-UML ministers showed that they would continue even after the resignation of prime minister. Whether one likes it or not, this is an old style of double speak of CPN-UML leaders.

Star-struck Thapa

Thapa : Decision to divide

At a time when RPP leaders are trying to organize nationwide campaign to mobilize the party workers, former prime minister and splinter leader of the party Surya Bahadur Thapa is said to be busy to give birth to a new party. Thapa, a founder member of RPP, is also known as a strong believer on astrology. It seems that he is waiting for an appropriate time to announce the name of the new party, as per the advice from his astrologer. Delay in announcing the name of the party has, however, boosted the morale of RPP leaders who have already announced a number of programs and rallies nationwide.

Deuba : Flexible

No Polls, No Tension

When prime minister Sher Bahadur Deuba is calling for early elections of the House of Representatives, deputy prime minister Bharat Mohan Adhikary claims that the situation is not favorable to hold the elections. At a time when deputy prime minister Adhikary can enjoy all the privileges and facilities without being elected, opposing the elections was not strange. If they hold the elections, Adhikary along with his colleagues will have to defend their actions in front of the representatives of the people. Best option for Adhikary is to continue as a nominated minister.

Populist Education

Although it has a small population, Nepal seems to be intent to become a country with a large number of universities. The country has already five universities and the government is considering opening another six within a year. While Education Minister Bimalendra Nidhi prefers a university in his hometown Janakpur, another two ministers, too, had shown their interest in opening the varsities in their constituencies. Even as there were three ministers wanting to open a university each, other three ministers have joined the race. And finally, the government has decided to set up six different universities. If this trend will continue, the country will soon have more universities than the students.

Three Way Contest?

Three Nepali Congress leaders have already decided that they will contest the forthcoming elections for the party presidentship. Shailaja Achaya has already announced her candidature and Ram Chandra Poudel is considering announcing his own candidature. Although he is yet to publicly announce his candidature, general secretary Sushil Koirala has adequately hinted that he will contest the elections in case present president Girija Prasad Koirala does not stand in the race. As Koirala keeps everyone guessing, whether there will be a three-way contest or a unanimous election remains to be seen.
