Endurance Required

The ongoing violence has cost a lot in terms of development to the country "MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS: Will They Be Met? (SPOTLIGHT September 24)." We have already suffered a lot. Irreparable damage has been caused to both lives and properties. The nation has been pushed back by many years. Above all the confidence level of individuals has shrunk. If this continues, it might even affect the national integrity and the developmental activities will be stalled furthermore. It is pretty sure that this kind of revolution is not going to bring about any changes in the twenty-first century. So, what we need to do is endure the situation. There is a saying in English that goes, "What cannot be cured must be endured." So, since we as individuals cannot do much to 'cure' the situation, we need to learn to endure it and move ahead in life.

Increase Employment Opportunities

The situation of employment is one of the measuring indices of development "MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS: Will They Be Met? (SPOTLIGHT September 24)." In addition, it is also one of the major factors that affect other development indices. So, first and foremost we need to increase the employment opportunities in order to improve the overall situation of development. The socio-political situation will also improve with the increase in employment opportunities. Whether it may be the September 1 incident or the culture of throwing stones on security people during the agitations, it is undoubtedly the result of high rate of unemployment. Not only that, even the Maoist problem is largely a result of unemployment. Without increasing the employment opportunities in the country the economic as well as socio-political situation will not improve.

Peace First

The entire country is ailing because of the conflict situation in the country "MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS: Will They Be Met? (SPOTLIGHT September 24)." In such a situation, even the available infrastructures are also not being used. The physical development has little meaning when there is no peace of mind. The mentality of countrymen has been very adversely affected by violence. So, at this time our first priority should be to establish peace before anything else.

Better Infrastructure For Better Tourism

Many tourists who come to Nepal to taste the authentic Nepali style get disappointed when they come here "THAMEL: The Siren Of Kathmandu (SPOTLIGHT September 24)." As you have presented in this article the tourist hub of Kathmandu has very little Nepali touch. Likewise, the hotels and other recreation places do not give any insight into Nepali culture. To experience the typical Nepali culture and lifestyle one needs go to the villages. Unfortunately, because of the insurgency, visiting the rural areas is not very easy. So, in order to develop tourism, we need to have better and more Nepali infrastructures.

Strange Koirala

The activities of the Nepalese leaders in the last few years has shown that Girija Prasad Koirala is the only assertive leader in the country at present "KOIRALA CONTROVERSY: Undesirable Consequences (SPOTLIGHT September 24)." This is entirely my personal feeling. I know the majority of people of Kathmandu might not share it. Leaders are supposed to be bold and have stance. And Koirala is the only leader who seldom changes his stand and does not fear to speak out what he feels. I feel that he speaks for the people (and his party of course.) But what I do not understand is why do most of the people criticize him severely. Is it because he was the Prime Minister for longer period than any other leaders? After all, no one would disagree that the culture of criticizing the person who was or is in power runs in the blood of we Nepalese.

Good Luck To Sugam

I am a fan of the songs of Sugam Pokhrel "SUGAM POKHREL: Promising Talent (SPOTLIGHT September 24)." I am very happy that you brought Sugam Pokhrel to your profile column this time. As an admirer of his songs I feel happy that he is not inclined to acting. Otherwise, how would we be able to listen to his beautiful songs in the future.
