Poet S. P. Koirala’s contemporary lyrics has many unique specialties

By A CORRESPONDENT

In other parts of the world, civil servants and public figures write books telling about important past events. Many civil servants have written books highlighting their working experiences. Some of the former civil servants write memoirs detailing the nitty gritty of government working styles and describing important and historic events. They do so after they retire from their official positions.

In Nepal , too, the new generation of civil servants has shown promises of writing talents. There are many emerging officers with talent and command over language. Nepal ’s civil service is now full of lyrics and poets. Chief secretary Bimal Prasad Koirala has written a number of poems and another secretary Bhoj Raj Ghimire has recently released his collection of lyrics. Joint secretary Dinesh Adhikary has already proved himself to be a popular lyricist. And now joint secretary S.P. Koirala has come out with a collection of lyrics/poems called “Dhadkanbhitra”.

Despite his career as a young and emerging bureaucrat, S.P. Koirala or Shanker Prasad Koirala is a well-known name as a poet and lyricist. Having proved as an efficient and dynamic young civil servant at the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Koirala is also equally popular figure in Nepali literature as a lyricist.

Koirala’s recent collection is full of poems and songs that depict reality and affections of human life. His lyrics are reflections of his own inner felling about passion, quest for love of human life. “The style and language of Koirala’s lyrics are powerful as they attract the feelings of other common people,” writes national poet Madhav Prasad Ghimire. “Poet S.P. Koirala is a lyricist of reality of life and sensibility of love.”

In his last two decades of writing, S.P. Koirala has already published a number of poems and lyrics. Although he has written short stories, essays and poems, S.P. Koirala has earned more fame in the lyrics.

Vice chancellor of Royal Nepalese Academy Dr. Bashudev Tripathi and Dr. Taranath Sharma describe S.P. Koirala as an emerging lyricist. “After reading some of his poems few years back, I found him talented with powerful command over expression.”

Some of his lyrics are very popular among Nepalese music lovers. From renowned lyricist Ratan Sumsher Thapa to lyric critic professor Krishna Hari Baral, all have found S.P. Koirala to be talented.

Written in different periods of time and in various places, the meanings of S.P. Koirala’s lyrics are simple but full of expression of complicated human life and their affairs. Despite the complexities of topics, Koirala’s expression is simple and interesting. This may be the reason why Koirala’s lyrics became popular in contemporary Nepal .
