The demonic attack on the passenger bus by the Maoists the other day in Chitwan district has proved beyond a ray of doubt that the Maoists are devoid of all humanitarian instincts. Killing innocent men, women and children, in no way, contributes to achieve their objective. Rather, such activities will only alienate even their sympathizers, if they have any. The whole world has condemned this heinous act. The Secretary General of the United Nations, too, came out very strongly against the barbarous behavior of the Maoists. But, it is very strange, Nepal's traditional friend of centuries and the biggest benefactor has still not realized its folly of giving sanctuary and patronizing the Maoist terrorists. If this is not clear indication who is behind this inhuman attack, what more concrete proof would one need to pinpoint the real culprit? It is no more a secret that India is pressurizing Nepal to give in to her ulterior motives. In pursuance of her vile intentions, she is blatantly flouting all moral and diplomatic norms by giving shelter to the declared terrorists and aiding and abetting them in all possible ways. It becomes ludicrous when they start shedding crocodile tears. What has come as an unbelievable surprise is that the lone super power committed to fight global terrorism is giving a blind eye to the naked double standard being followed by India. Under these circumstances, the octogenarian Girija Prasad Koirala, with one leg in the grave, is again gone to his pilgrimage to New Delhi to seek blessings from his gods to install him, once again, at Singh Durbar. How his gods will help him time only will show. But, that Girija Prasad Koirala has not given up the ambition of becoming the chief minister of Nepal at his age is mind-boggling, indeed. A power hungry man with no popular base in his own country would not mind playing a quisling is nothing very strange. All the patriotic people of Nepal have seen the true face of Girija Prasad Koirala and now must decide what kind of treatment he deserves. King Gyanendra, too, must be well aware of the holier than cow Koirala and would not hesitate to assign him to his proper place. He also must not be unaware how many of our politicians, intellectuals, bureaucrats and media men are working under alien influence. Consequently, he has a stupendous job on his hands. And he most urgently needs the unstinted support and cooperation of his loyal and patriotic countrymen. And this demands sheer objectivity on his part. As far the Maoist insurgency is concerned, it is our problem and we must solve it. We cannot rely on friends who refuse to see the reality being blinded by their own interest. As such, it is high time, King Gyanendra discarded all the opportunists and took only men of unimpeachable integrity into confidence. His success would be in his ability to make the right choice. Any knee-wobbling performance, at this juncture, would not only put monarchy at stake but also pose a great threat to the very independence of the nation.
