Relevant Issue

Thank you very much for covering the relevant issue that is a common concern of all the residents of Kathmandu (“GROWING THIRST” SPOTLIGHT June 17). While none of us are able to suggest a capsule remedy for the escalating problem of water scarcity in Kathmandu , it is very true that it has become the most dreaded nightmares for majority of the households residing within the core city area. The same trend of water scarcity follows every dry season worsening every year. We, as the residents of Kathmandu valley, can only hope for the earliest end to this crisis. But nobody knows if it will ever end or when it will end if it does.

No News

With the same problem repeating year after year and affecting virtually every individual in the city, the write ups and reports about the water scarcity in Kathmandu has ceased to be news any more (“GROWING THIRST” SPOTLIGHT June 17). The issue gets a lot of coverage in the media, invites a lot of discussions and thousands of rupees is spent on researches and seminars. But the crisis has become so integral part of the residents of Kathmandu that people have started to lose interest in any coverage about this issue. It only adds to their agonies. The people are now desperately seeking ways out of the crisis. Researchers, media people, government agencies and others concerned groups should now focus on giving an outlet to the problem rather than reporting on the situation prevailing in the city.

Explore Options

The scarcity of water in Kathmandu has now reached a critical situation (“GROWING THIRST” SPOTLIGHT June 17). With the population rising higher and higher and the available sources drying up, it is no more possible to solve the problem with traditional approaches. Neither can the Kathmanduites afford to entangle in the same situation for long. It has already started to affect the day to day lives of Kathmandu residents. Water collection has become very time consuming. It has also created stress among the people affecting their productivity. So, before it is too late we have to seek viable options that could be a potent solution for the problem. We should now explore options like harvesting rainwater, reusing the used water after necessary purification or similar other options that can be possible. Initiatives should start from the individual levels to harvest rainwater or recycle water. And the researchers and the government should focus on researching cost effective and viable ways of acquiring and optimally using all possible sources of water.

Rectify Errors

The conduction of the SLC exam and the process of publication of results have to go through a lot of reforms (“Abysmal Outcome” SPOTLIGHT June 17). The news about the serious flaw in announcement of the topper among the girls has revealed the utter negligence of the controller of examination. If the office cannot even check the name of the toppers properly, how can we be assured that the result of the rest of the candidates is flawless. The office of the controller of examinations has got many years of experience, but it is an irony that, still it has not been able to function satisfactorily. It is a matter of everybody’s concern and the future of hundreds of thousands of students. A responsible government agency like the controller of examination should leave no stones unturned to rectify such mistakes in the future.

Stop Dirty Politics

There have been a lot of speculations since the past many years about the dirty politics involved during the publication of SLC results (“Abysmal Outcome” SPOTLIGHT June 17). The recent news about one of the board topper’s name among the girls being missed in the record of controller of examination has verified that politics is involved during the announcement of the board toppers’ names. If the government cannot assure impartiality during the announcement of board toppers’ names, it is better if they do without it. The abolition of the system of board toppers will stop such unhealthy competition prevalent between the renowned schools of the country.

People’s Singer

Thank you very much for covering the profile of nationalist singers like Ramesh Shrestha (“Singing For The Country” SPOTLIGHT June 17). Artistes who devote the most productive part of their life in generating awareness among the people should be encouraged. In fact, artistes like Ramesh have contributed more than any political leader in raising their voices and creating a level of political awareness among them. Whether the government honors them or not, the Nepalese people are very much obliged to Ramesh. He will always remain in the hearts of the Nepalese people.
